SYNOPSIS
Phillip is an ambitious junior executive for Lockheart Resources, a major
Australian mining company on the verge of collapse. The problem?
There’s nothing left to mine! Under intense pressure from his boss, Chifley
Lockheart, Phillip comes up with an idea for an exclusive new product, one
for those that appreciate the finer things in life—designer air.
A WO R D F R O M T H E P L AY W R I G H T
Phillip’s invention—the Suck ‘n’ Blow—stores air and cleans it before releasing it again,
and soon becomes the must-have product for anyone wanting to breathe a little easier.
Gasping was my first professional play and like most of my work with
the exception of the odd Holocaust novel, it’s a comedy. A comedy which
imagines a world where the air we breathe has to be harvested, mined and
marketed just like food and fuel and all the other finite natural resources
of our planet. Because let’s face it, the fact that air remains the one single
necessity of life which is still free, and consumed equally by rich and poor
alike is just a bit of luck really. If somebody could sell it they would.
Everything seems to be going well for Phillip; he gets promoted, he’s raking in money,
and he’s landed his dream girl. The problem is, the Suck ‘n’ Blow stores too much oxygen,
and the air’s getting thinner by the day. It isn’t long before Lockheart comes up with a
solution: privatising the air industry. Not just premium air, all air. If you can’t pay, you
can’t breathe.
Now living in Australia as I do, in the midst of an on-going national debate about our own
precious and finite resources, I couldn’t help but be struck by how much of my 25 year old
play was even more relevant today than it was when it was written. And also what glorious
tragi-comic theatrical potential there was in the attitudes and excesses of those characters
that control the nations’ natural wealth.
Soon enough, thousands of people are suffering and suffocating, unable to pay the high
price of oxygen, while air companies burn the excess to maintain a stable market. People
are getting desperate, willing to do anything to breathe, but Lockheart won’t back down.
Phillip faces a crisis of conscience, and must choose between his career and his personal
convictions.
I’m therefore hugely grateful and excited that Black Swan has offered me the chance to
re-think and, partially, rewrite much of my original play for a new century and a new
country. For new influences and new inspirations. It’s a rare and real privilege for a
playwright to be presented with such an opportunity.
Black Swan is a ground breaking and innovative theatre company, which, under the
inspired guidance of Kate Cherry, has developed an international reputation. It’s also my
local theatre and I cannot wait to be a part of the team.

Ben Elton is a comic icon. comedy are infinite as you have to portray
all the emotional truth of a tragedy but
there is no fudging the timing. Comedy is an
ensemble task with straight characters and
funny characters working in a complex dance
of build-up and knock down. There is no
joke if the set-up is fumbled and no reward
if the punchline is compromised. Comic casts
are full of the push and pull of the script and
how best the actors can deliver their role to
help realise the vision of the writer.
The joy of working on this play is the
amazing gift Ben has with words. They swirl
around you and land on your ear like delicate
butterflies that then bore into your head and
force you to laugh. He is the Mohammad Ali
of comic writers because as soon as his words
have stung you with their sting they are off
dancing around the ring with the dexterity
and mouthy confidence of a prize fighter.
The rehearsal room has been charged with
equal parts awe, intimidation and hard work
as the task master of text and the god of satire
are evoked to excite and express the big ideas.
It’s wonderful to work with such a great team
of artists who have had to survive with me
pulling out the metronome in rehearsals to
dictate pace and rhythm, creating choreography
for movements on stage and imagining how the
set could possibly work as we pushed couches
and tables around the rehearsal room. This is
their greatest talent to imagine the impossible
and to still find the joy in the work.
The role of directing this work has been
as much about finding the right rhythms
and cadence of the character as it has been
about exploring motivations and narrative
arcs. Good comedy falls on your ear with
an inevitable sense of set up and punchline,
whilst never forgetting to surprise and
delight with the unexpected.
Thank you to Queensland Theatre Company
and Black Swan State Theatre for the
amazing support in getting all this together.
There is a saying that comedy is harder
to perform than tragedy. The demands of
Love Wesley.

WRITTEN BY CHRISTINA SMITH AND PENNY CHALLEN
Imagine a world that is a not too distant future… or perhaps an alternate
reality that is familiar to us. Mining has reached its limit, profits have dried
up and magnates seek the next resource to plunder in the name of progress.
Intended to promote creative thinking, but
in reality a smoke and mirrors of innocence
applied to a marketing world that is
anything but. In designing this fast moving comedy, the
pace of ‘progress’ became a driving force
in the design. The space needed to create
adaptive spaces that move with a bat-paced
comic book feel. Combing slick lines and
a white space, the set is a container that
holds the various locations within. The
look is inspired by corporate images of
ultra-modern sixties offices, Maxwell Smart
and cone-of-silence style ‘lockdowns’. It is
hygienically sparse and hermetically sealed. The shiny material and block primary
colours of these environments are in stark
contrast to Peggy’s world. Natural and
vintage, her home is a museum of collected
pieces. Nothing is new, but all of it is loved.
Peggy space shows us another side to the
world of Gasp! Real people who consume –
or rather, choose not to. As Peggy is drawn
further into Phillip’s world, we see hers
change too.
Along with sliding floors, the worlds
change rapidly with the set behaving
as a giant James Turrell like lightbox.
The back wall, a rear projection screen,
enables us to jump to any location, and
any time. News footage, skylines and
hospital interiors are rapidly displayed.
Clean, pop-like graphics burst into the
space. For Image Control, I looked to the
much celebrated Google Sydney offices,
where child like art and playful space has
been embraced by the corporate world.
Boldy drawn characters are larger than
life. Kirsten is part amazon, part tiger.
Structured tailoring, animal prints and bold
colour help display her character. Peggy is
decidedly retro-chic, with her feet dabbling
in a world she doesn’t belong to. Phillip
grows into his burgeoning career, and is
progressively more shiny and slick.

Ben Elton is one of the most prolific writers in comedy. In addition to Gasp!
Elton has also written for some of the most beloved shows of the modern
age, as well as writing best-selling books, cult classic comedies and groundbreaking musicals. Join us as we take a look back over his illustrious career.
Gasping
The original version of Gasp!, This play
opened in 1990 at the Theatre Royal
Haymarket in London’s West End and
starred Hugh Laurie and the voice of
Stephen Fry. Elton has since reimagined the
play for a new audience in a new setting,
ensuring that this production is as relevant,
and side-splittingly funny, as ever!
Blackadder
Widely considered to be one of the
greatest comedies of all time, this series
follows the (mis)adventures of Edmund
Blackadder in different periods of British
history. Blackadder, in all his incarnations,
is a cynical opportunist concerned with
increasing his own wealth and stature
at the expense of everyone around
him—including the British royal family if
necessary! Starring comedy legend Rowan
Atkinson along with a bevvy of guest stars,
Blackadder is a must-watch show for fans
of Ben Elton’s trademark caustic wit and
Atkinson’s impeccable comic delivery.
The Young Ones
Ben Elton’s first foray into television
comes from this classic British comedy
written when Elton was just 21 years old.
The series follows four students sharing
a house while attending the aptly titled
Scumbag College, pious anarchist Rick,
depressed hippie Neil, philosophical conartist Mike and psychotic punk Vyvyan.
The series was immensely popular in the
UK, and won the BAFTA award for best
comedy series in 1985. It has enjoyed a cult
following ever since.
We Will Rock You
Co-written with rock gods Queen, this
electrifying rock-musical exploded
after its 2002 London premiere, being
absolutely showered with praise for its
stunning blend of musical theatre and
full-blown rock show.
1
2013-02-27
The story tasks two young lovers
with reviving rock music in a cold,
sterile world that has long since
outlawed individuality. It might not
be Shakespeare, but Elton’s musical
masterpiece has remained a fan favourite
for more than a decade.
Love Never Dies
This next production saw Elton combine
his talent with that of acclaimed
playwright and composer Andrew Lloyd
Webber to create a musical of epic
proportions. Set ten years after the events
of The Phantom of the Opera, this sequel
follows the titular Phantom to his new
home: New York City. A play showcasing
Elton’s ability to craft a dramatic script
as well as a humorous one, this play was
praised for its beautiful melodies and
intricate lyricism.
Mr Bean
Surely this is one show that needs no
introduction. The beloved, slapstick
comedy series follows the various
misfortunes in the life of simple-minded
protagonist, Mr Bean. A truly classic
series that picked up a slew of BAFTA
nominations on the way to cementing
Rowan Atkinson as a bona fide master of
contemporary comedy.

High Society
Turning his comic abilities to the written
word, Elton constructed the darkly
comic novel High Society. The book
discusses, with trademark tongue in
cheek humour, what would happen to
our society if all recreational drugs were
suddenly made legal. Winner of a W H
Smith People’s Choice award, this book
is a great introduction to Elton’s typically
zany characters, as well as his knack for
portraying societies gone wrong.
Stay tuned for Ben Elton’s next
instalment – a novel ‘Time and Time
Again’ due for release through Random
House in November 2014.

Ambitious Collaborations. Daring Audiences
Black Swan State Theatre Company is Western Australia’s Flagship Theatre
Company and one of Australia’s foremost theatre companies
Since then, live broadcasts to regional WA
have become an annual event for Black
Swan, complementing the Company’s annual
regional touring and workshop programs.
Since its inception in 1991, Black Swan has
earned both critical and popular acclaim
for its world premiere productions and
highly distinctive (re) interpretations of
international theatre classics – all of which
are infused with the unique culture of
Western Australia.
In 2014 Black Swan will take audiences on
a journey of discovery and misadventure
presented by a dynamic combination
of emerging artists, familiar Western
Australian talent and nationally acclaimed
stars. On the Heath Ledger stage we
have three classics, A Streetcar Named
Desire, The Seagull and As You Like It;
an Australian world premiere about a very
dusty day in WA aptly titled Dust, and two
contemporary comedies, Laughter on the
23rd Floor and Gasp!. We also launched the
Black Swan Lab with productions of Flood
and The House on The Lake in the Studio
Underground.
These have included such landmark
productions as Bran Nue Dae, Sistergirl,
Tourmaline, Corrugation Road (winner of
the prestigious The Age Critics’ Award), The
Merry-Go-Round in the Sea, Cloudstreet
(Perth, Sydney, London and Dublin seasons)
The Odyssey, The Sapphires (Perth,
Canberra, London and Korea seasons)
and Boundary Street (Perth & Brisbane
seasons).
Under the leadership of Artistic Director
Kate Cherry, Black Swan has also created
the Rio Tinto Black Swan Commissions, a
commissioning program investing into WA’s
creative future and showcasing Western
Australian stories. The Company also runs
professional development programs for
emerging Western Australian artists and
emerging writers.
theatre experiences on moderate
production budgets.
During 2014 Black Swan has produced two
productions in the Studio Underground at
the State Theatre Centre of WA. Our artistic
vision includes a staged increase to four
productions in the Studio Underground
over the next 2-3 years with the following
artist development objectives:
• A space to develop and stretch
emerging artists, many from Black
Swan’s artistic development programs,
allowing them to flex their “artistic
muscles” and creatively collaborate with
and learn from experienced colleagues.
• A destination for young and
adventurous theatre lovers who seek
a theatre experience beyond Black
Swan’s mainstage productions as well as
productions suitable for touring.
Two productions will have their world
premieres as part of the Black Swan Lab. They
are Flood by Chris Isaacs, the first work to
come from our Emerging Writers Group,
and The House on The Lake by Aidan
Fennessy.
• A performance venue that is flexible
and versatile enough to produce intense

development from our Resident Artists

RESIDENT ARTISTS PROGRAM
Black Swan has been a Resident Company
in the State Theatre Centre of Western
Australia since its opening in January 2011.
In its first year at the State Theatre Centre,
Black Swan presented the world premiere
of Rising Water, the first piece written
by Tim Winton specifically for the stage.
In the same year, Black Swan was the first
Australian theatre company to broadcast a
live stage performance, when Shakespeare’s
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by
Kate Cherry, was broadcast in real time to
audiences across regional Western Australia.
with Artistic Director Kate Cherry and
artistic staff.
The Resident Artists Program is targeted at
mid-level experienced creatives including
directors, designers, writers and composers
looking to advance their careers. They
will play an integral part in the Company
as they mentor the Emerging Artists and
participate in peer reviews and public talks.
Black Swan will provide significant profiling

Through collaboration with our Principal
Partner, Rio Tinto, Black Swan has created
a research and development wing of
the company that offers commissions,
dramaturgy and workshops for new work.
The new work that is created through the
commissioning program takes various
forms. Occasionally, Black Swan offers
a substantial commission to a writer of
national stature to deliver a script that we
are convinced, based on the writer’s track
record, will go straight to the main stage.
Other writers are offered a commission
because we would like to see how they
intend to develop an idea that intrigues
us or because we would like to foster an
ongoing relationship and we want the
playwright to continue writing.
Writers currently under commission are:
Hilary Bell, Ingle Knight, Caleb Lewis,
Damon Lockwood, Suzie Miller, Tommy
Murphy, Hellie Turner and Brendan
Hanson and Tim Cunniffe.
