Description
This month in reading your child will continue to read books that have been
read aloud to them over and over again. These are called emergent
storybooks. This rereading helps to increase language, vocabulary and the
idea of how a story goes. The children will have time to read, think, and talk
together about these books. You can support your child at home by
encouraging them to read their favorite books to you by looking at the
pictures and using their own words to narrate what is happening.
This month in writing your child will be looking closely at a science related
topic. They will be writing about this topic by labeling pictures and making
lists. You can support your child at home by encouraging them to make lists
of items in your household, such as ‘things in the kitchen’, or ‘things in the
living room’.
This month the Kindergarten Mathematicians will build and compare sets to
help them compare numbers 0 to 5. They will use matching and counting
strategies to compare sets with the same number of objects and compare
sets when the number of objects in one set is greater than or less than the
number of objects in the other set. You can support your child at home by
gathering two sets of five items and line them up on a table in two groups of
different quantities. First, ask your child to count and tell you how many are
in each set. Next, have your child point to the set that has the greater
number of objects. Then, ask your child to point to the set with the number
of objects that is less.
Scientists will explore properties of objects using senses. Texture
concepts including smooth, rough, thin and thick will be explored.
What does it mean to be a member of a school community?

Second Grade
Description
In November, we will begin reading information books. Students will
learn about the world through their books, and begin to develop
ideas and opinions about the topics they study.
Writing
This month, we will work on Informational Writing. Students will
work on writing non-fiction books using information learned from
their reading, while learning how to make them more detailed and
organized.
Math

In math, second grade students will be exploring basic facts and
relationships. In keeping with the Common Core Standards, students
will be adding and subtracting within 20, represent and solve
problems involving addition and subtraction and work with equal
groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication. Furthermore,
students will learn how to use patterns and strategies to find sums
and differences for basic facts by using doubles facts, practicing
addition facts, practicing subtraction facts, relating addition to
subtraction and using drawings and equations to represent problems.
Scientists will explore properties of clay using the senses and scientific
tools.

Social Studies
Our new Social Studies Unit is New York City Over Time. We will
be looking at how New York has changed from the 1600's to today.
We will also be exploring why it has changed by digging deep into
technology advancements, transportation, communication, and the
physical environment to help us understand how New York City
came to be the great city we know today.

Third Grade
Description
This month your child will continue to build their nonfiction reading life by
reading nonfiction text. Your child will learn the following things as a
nonfiction reader… determining importance and finding main ideas and
supportive details; questioning and talking back to the text; figuring out and
using new content specific vocabulary; and applying analytical thinking skills
to compare and contrast, rank or categorize.
You can help your child become a strong nonfiction reader by taking them
to the library so that they may have an opportunity to read various kinds of
nonfiction books and become familiar with their different structures as well
as text features.
This month your child will continue to learn how to write informational
books on topics they are experts on. They will focus on the structure of an
information book including topics and subtopics that are signaled with
headings and subheadings, glossaries and text boxes or sidebars, and
diagrams, charts, graphs, and other visuals. You can help your child by having
them explore various information books so that they may become familiar
with its components. You can also help your child, become aware of things
they are experts on, by making them aware of things they do to help you,
etc…
This month in math, your child will be learning multiplication. In chapter 3,
your child will learn how to use multiplication and how to find how many in
all using different strategies. Some strategies your child will learn are
properties of multiplication, using arrays and using equal groups to find how
many in all. You can help your child at home by practicing multiplication
facts.
Third graders are completing the unit of “Plant and Animal
Adaptations.” We will be finishing up this unit , looking at Bess
Beetles and noticing their structure and functions.
We are finishing up our study of world geography by exploring how
geographic factors influence where people live and form communities. We
will look at how they adapt to the environment and change it to meet their
needs. At the end of the unit, we will take a brief look at how communities
across the world share similarities and differences to help get us ready for
out world case studies during the next few units.

Fourth Grade
Description
This month 4th grade readers will enter a new unit of study- Reading the
Weather, Reading the World. Purposeful reading of nonfiction. In the unit,
readers will be invited to read any variety of nonfiction text that piques their
interest. They will learn to identify various text structures, learn how to take
notes, and learn how to compose concise summaries identifying key
information. As they progress deeper into the 4th grade, readers will learn
together in research teams as they continue to sharpen their skills in synthesizing
information, and by becoming experts on their research topics as they in turn
share their newfound knowledge with one another.
Fourth grade writers will enter the Boxes and Bullets: Personal and Persuasive
units of study. In this unit 4th grade writers will learn how to compose powerful
writing in the traditional essay format entailing both compelling content and
ideas. They will also learn how to gather and revise evidence so it is angled to
support their claims. By the end of this unit, our fourth grade essayists will draw
on everything they know about personal essays to compose a persuasive essay
that incorporates text based evidence.
In the month of November, Go Math students will use various algorithms to
solve 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication operations.
Science
4th Graders are learning about food webs and food chains. Students will be
working with lizards, crickets and earth worms seeing how they survive and
are interconnected.
Social Studies
This month fourth graders will be learning that the early European explorers
were seeking the Northwest Passage. Students will also investigate the
important French and Dutch leaders as well as European exploration which led
to the colonization and development of New York. Common Core Social
Studies and Literacy Standards are embedded in this unit as we read to research
about many cultures of New York. You can support your child by taking them
to the library to research and read about this topic. Ask them questions about
what they are learning and encourage them to respond with facts and evidence.

Fifth Grade
Description
At the beginning of the month, 5th graders will continue to work on researching
debatable issues. In the middle of the month, they will move on to a unit called
“Learning Through Reading: Westward Expansion”. In this unit, children will be
responsible for researching a specific topic about the Westward Expansion of the
United States. They will use nonfiction strategies that they already know, and will
also learn new ways to organize and synthesize information. In addition, students will
study author’s purpose, thinking about why authors include or exclude certain
facts. You can help your children by taking a trip to the library and helping them
research their Westward Expansion topic. This will help them gain more knowledge
about their specific topic.
At the beginning of the month, 5th graders will continue to work on writing research
based argument essays. In the middle of the month, they will move on to a unit that
coincides with the Westward Expansion reading unit. Students will be writing
information books about Westward Expansion topics. They will learn how to write
in such a way that they can teach others about their topics. Children will chunk
information into chapters, combining facts, quotations, stories, and ideas. They will
choose a structure for their writing and learn how to add appropriate text features
like charts and diagrams. You can help your children by showing them different types
of informational texts in order for them to become more familiar with how they are
written.
This month, 5th graders will be studying decimals. Students add and subtract decimals
using several models. Of particular importance is the place-value model represented
with base-ten blocks. As students solve addition problems with base-ten blocks
where the flat is equal to one, the long is equal to one-tenth and the small cube is
equal to one-hundredth, they are led to see that when adding decimals, the
hundredths can be combined with hundredths, the tenths with tenths, and so on.
They see that similar reasoning can be applied to subtraction. These experiences
help students look for and make use of structure as they make sense of place-value
algorithms for adding and subtracting decimals.
5th graders are immersed within the unit of Variables. Students are creating
pendulums and lifeboats to test variables and capacity.
Students will explore how issues of power, wealth, and morality influence exploration
and colonization. They will learn that various European powers explored and
eventually colonized the Western Hemisphere, having a profound impact on native
people.
