We Believe... One God, Three Persons
Worthless?
Palm Sunday and Jesus enters the city
knowing what’s ahead. Gethsemane has revealed
his heart - there’s a deep pain there,
but his face is set like flint towards
Jerusalem.
He will face the forces of darkness;
but also the dismay of those closest
to him; and the disappointment of a
people group yearning for freedom
from Roman oppression.
The crowd’s yearning is given voice
in their battle cry as Jesus approaches - “Hosanna”. Their
longing was for a violent uprising, but Jesus’
longing was for his Father’s will to be completed.
He was ready to take up his cross and die – to the
(temporary) delight of his enemies and the
(equally temporary) devastation of his friends.
Jesus is not into people pleasing, but
Father-pleasing. His popularity had soared around
the feeding of the 5000, but people soon began to
drift away in ever greater numbers.
In this sense, Holy Week is a microcosm
of his ministry: the fleeting attention of
a multitude, followed by rejection and a
fast dwindling number of followers. To
repeatedly brave that sort of rejection
takes a huge heart.
Five days after Jesus entered Jerusalem he
was brutally nailed to a cross, and if the
story ended there, we’d say that he was an
absolute failure.
Worthless.
But the story doesn’t end there, does it. Does it?
Yours,
Pastor David
Giving Update
News about Becca
Thank you to all of you who have
committed to pray and review your
giving.
Becca Shaw is on the
move and has been
offered a job at a local
children’s nursery.
We hope that Giving Sunday will be a
yearly reminder for us to reflect on our
finances and to thank God, the provider
of all we have.
If you have any further questions about
tithing at Elmwood or how to set up a
standing order or how to gift aid your
donation, please speak to
David McCormick or Sally Prentice.
We’re delighted for
Becca’s sake, but very
sad that her time as
an Elmwood staff
member will be drawing to a close in early
April. The good news
is that this is a local
job and Becca will still
be worshipping with
us and involved in a
number of the youth activities – albeit at a lesser
intensity.
Becca, we’d like to thank you for the sacrificial way you
have served the Lord and our young people; to ask
God’s blessing on this next phase of your career; and to
rejoice that you will still be involved in our church
family in future.
We will take the chance to say (a sort of) goodbye to
Becca at the morning service on April 10th.

The Marriage Course
Starts on Monday 18th April
A few weeks ago friend of Simeon
Parrott, Pastor Mike Long, came to
share and preach at Elmwood.
Many Elmwood members sought to
support the work his church is doing
and the amount given so far is
£1,582.50. It is being transferred to
Mike via the Free Methodist Church of
which he is a
member.
Deadline for next issue:
Tuesday 5th April

By the end of the course the guests and
team alike had formed some good
friendships, and so the final evening’s
discussion around the topic, ‘How does
God Guide?’ was as lively as ever.
We were unable to hold an Alpha Day
Away which focuses on the Holy Spirit, so
we tried out a new scheme. We held two
midweek evening events; a regular
programme on the Tuesday, with a more
reflective evening on the following
Thursday. It worked really well.
His church in Thessalonica in Greece is
heavily involved in supporting the
thousands of refugees who take the
dangerous sea crossing from Turkey.
Thank you to
everyone who has
given in this way. If
you would like to
know more or to
make a donation,
please see Sim.
Elmwood’s latest Alpha Course finished
last Tuesday amid many rounds of
thanks for the fabulous meals provided
by our chefs.
Our guests’ response to the post Alpha
questionnaire was positive all round and
every guest has indicated that they
would be interested in a follow-up Beta
course.
It's not too late to sign up for the Marriage Course
2016. The course aims to enhance your marriage
however long ago you tied the knot!
Simply complete one of the yellow forms available at
Reception.
Twenty guests and leaders, across a wide range of ages,
had a great time at the Launch Party last week. They
enjoyed a lovely meal as they gathered and heard some
fascinating marriage insights from Nick & Silla Lee.
Why not sign up today for seven evenings when you
won't have to cook??!!
Thanks to everyone for their hard work
and to you all for your prayers.
