Georgia All-State Show 2017

Georgia All-State Show
2017
Memphis is a musical by David Bryan (music and lyrics) and Joe DiPietro (lyrics and
book). It is loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, on of the first white
DJs to play black music in the 1950s. John Simon of the Bloomberg News praised the
show as well: “I guarantee you a rambunctious good time, highlighted by rousing music
and singing, spectacular dancing, and a witty moving story.”

Character Breakdown
HUEY - Caucasian, 20s-30s. Frenzied, bombastic, motor-mouthed hero, who talks his
way into becoming a DJ at a local white Radio station. Ignores race barriers and
eventually falls in love with Felicia, a talented black singer, which causes a whole new
set of problems for Huey in a segregated 1950s Memphis. Tenor must have a great feel
for pop/rock/r&b music styles.
FELICIA - African American, 20s-30s. Beautiful, wide-eyed. Fiercely gifted singer.
Follows her heart and falls in love with Huey, despite knowing deep down that a
relationship between a white man and a black woman in prejudiced Memphis is doomed.
High r&b belt.
DELRAY - African American man, 30s-40s. Felicia's older brother. Owns the club on
Beale Street where she sings. Realistic, cautious, protective, and aware of the realities
of the segregation that exists in Memphis and the world beyond. Bari-tenor with great
pop/rock/r&b singing voice.
GLADYS - Caucasian, 40s-60s. Huey's stern, traditional blue-collar, Southern mother.
Has worked her entire life to be able to support herself and her son, whom she loves,
but about whom she constantly worries. Strong singer with alto-belt mix; excellent actor
with comic skills.
GATOR - African American man, 20s-30s. Bartender at Delray's - hasn't spoken since
age five, when he saw his father killed. As the story progresses, Gator finds his voice
again. Requires an excellent actor and singer (great r&b Bari-tenor); comic timing a plus.
BOBBY - African American, 30s-40s. Janitor at Mr. Simmons' radio station. Full of
personality and heart. Great gospel voice. Role requires an actor who is comfortable
with physicality, as he has a dance break in his show-stopping number ''Big Love”;
comic skills a plus.
MR. SIMMONS - Caucasian, 40s-60s. Conservative owner of the radio station where
Huey gets his start. The strong, Southern, commanding businessman becomes willing
to take a chance on Huey when he realizes the audience Huey reaches and the money
he can command. Great actor who is comfortable singing.
MALE ENSEMBLE - All ethnicities. Male dancers who sing very well, to play various
ensemble characters. Seeking excellent, athletic dancers who sing.
FEMALE ENSEMBLE - All ethnicities. Female dancers who sing very well, to play
various ensemble characters. Seeking excellent, athletic dancers who sing.

Performer and Technician Contract
Being in a show requires time commitment, a good attitude, and maturity. Please
review the contract, “Theatre Code of Ethics,” financial responsibilities and
rehearsal calendar. It is important that the student, parent/guardian/ and troupe
director understand the responsibilities and commitments involved in being a
part of the show before auditioning or interviewing.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Participants must make all scheduled rehearsals and shows (see rehearsal and
performance schedule). If a participant misses a scheduled rehearsal without
prior consent from the Director, he/she will be asked to leave the show.
Rehearsals are very important and should not be missed.
Participants will be expected to attend the 2017 Georgia Thespian Conference to
perform in the show. All registration and hotel expenses for the conference are
the responsibility of the participants and should be handled through their
respective troupe. Students may not participate in the show if they are not a
registered attendee at the 2017 Georgia Thespian Conference.
Participants will be required to pay and/or raise a $900 production fee. This will
help cover many expenses including: the summer intensive, rehearsals, housing
and food for the summer intensive and rehearsals, and show t-shirts. This
production fee will also help cover airfare, shuttle, and registration for the
International Thespian Festival should we get selected to perform. This fee will
not cover the cost of hotel the day before or during the Georgia Thespian
Conference, nor will it cover your registration fees for said conference.
Participants must provide their own transportation to all rehearsals.
Transportation to the International Thespian Festival will be the exception.
Participants should expect minor clothing costs (i.e. shoes and basic
undergarments).
Participants’ parents are asked to avoid restricting their child’s involvement from
the play as a form of punishment once their child has been cast. The play is
contingent on all participants. If there are problems that could bar a participant
from continuing in the show, please contact the show Director as soon as
possible to arrange a replacement.
Participants’ Troupe Directors are asked not to punish or penalize participants in
the All-State Show by scheduling mandatory performances or rehearsals at your
school during the Performances or rehearsals of the All-State Show.
Participants that do not follow direction, cause conflict, or break the code of
ethics or school rules during the rehearsal process will be removed from the
show. It is an honor to be involved in this show.
If selected to perform at International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, NE you would need
to keep the end of June 2017 open for this honor. If we are not selected then a portion
of your production fee will be reimbursed. Please do not audition/interview if you
cannot commit to the time and financial commitment. Those who have not met
their financial commitment by the January Rehearsal may be removed from the
show during Thespian Conference and International Festival.

2017 Georgia Thespian All-State Show - 13 Some ideas for fundraising…
•
Have you asked your director for help?
•
Talk to your school principal to see if he/she has any funds to contribute - you are
representing your school. (A fundraising letter will be given to all participants later
to help raise funds.)
•
Have you approached booster clubs/ PTSA at your school? They may have
some money they can contribute.
•
Have you approached civic clubs in your town? A call or a mailed letter might be
all it takes to get a contribution.
•
Have you asked a group you are involved with outside of school? (church, rotary
club, Kiwanis club...)
Disclaimer
Even though this packet is intended to be as informative and inclusive as possible, the
show Director and the State Director of Georgia Thespians reserve the right to add
information, policies, and procedures if necessary for the success of the production.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child.

Theatre Code of Ethics
“Successful performances are possible only if everyone – actor, director, stage
crew, and audience – shows proper respect for everyone involved. Achieving the
best results is possible only in an environment of personal responsibility and
mutual respect.” – Unknown
Part of the great tradition of the theatre is a code of ethics, which belongs to every
worker on or behind the stage. It is an attitude toward craftsmanship, a respect for
associates, and a dedication toward the audience. This code outlines a self-discipline,
which, far from robbing one of individuality, increaser personal esteem and dignity
through cooperation and common purpose. The result is perfection, which
encompasses all that is meant by “Good Theatre.”
