Dear Family,
At School
Since contractions often appear in oral and written language, children need to have a
good understanding of them. Once they understand how they are constructed and used,
they will have a better understanding and be able to use them in their writing. Your child
has been working on forming contractions using the words as, is, will, not, are, have and
had.
At Home
Your child has been learning to recognize contractions and understand what they mean
through sorting them into various groups. They have also been able to explain what a
contraction means. Using the word cards that your child has brought home, have them
practice sorting the cards (are, have, had) with you and other family members.

Point out the contractions that are found as you and your child read together.
Enjoy learning together!
