Mummy portraits from Roman Egypt

Public Lecture
Mummy portraits from
Roman Egypt
By Professor Brian Sparkes
Saturday Jan 11th 2014 1.30 for 2.00pm
The painted faces on the mummy
wrappings and cartons that have
been uncovered in the Fayum and
other districts raise questions such
as who were the people painted?
Were they painted on death or
earlier? Are they true portraits? The
lecture will be illustrated with a wide
range of examples.
