Simon Smith

The Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) is excited to announce a new series of
free monthly events, Meet the Author, giving LIV members and the public
an opportunity to ask authors questions, and hear them discuss their books
and opinions in person.
Our inaugural event’s esteemed author is: Mr Simon Smith
THE AUTHOR
Simon Smith is a lawyer and historian, and
is currently an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow
in the Faculty of Law, Monash University. In
a professional life spanning four decades,
he has worked as a community legal centre
lawyer, university teacher, ombudsman, senior
executive in financial services and insurance
industry archivist.
Simon is the author of numerous articles
in the fields of consumer protection, legal
practice and alternative dispute resolution.
His previous books include In the Consumer
Interest, From Club to Corporation: Motor
Insurance and the rise of AAMI 1933-1999
and Maverick Litigants.
Simon has a B. Juris, LL.M and PhD (Legal
History) from Monash University, Melbourne.

in Australian Colonial
Legal History. In the two
hundred and twentyfive years since 1788,
lawyers have carved out a prominent and
respected place in the life of Australia. It has
not always been so. The first lawyers to arrive

decades before ‘free’ trained lawyers began
to arrive in the colony. Even so, the reputation
of the profession was poor; too many lawyers
were seen as ‘Pettifoggers’*. It took time for the
profession to win community respect: a task
that is never finished.
