Introducing charitable bonds
A new way to give as you save
The charitable bond
• A five-year ethical savings bond
• Issued by Allia, a charitable organisation
• Interest made by lending to AA rated (very
low risk) social housing provider
• Investors share their interest with their
chosen charitable cause
How it works
• Invest from just £100
• Choose how much interest you want on
maturity and how much to give up front
• Your cause gets the gross interest when the
bonds are issued
• You get your investment back with any
interest due after five years
Who is involved
• Allia
– A non-profit organisation, established in 1999.
– Has raised £18m to date through bonds.
• Places for People Homes
– Not-for-dividend social housing provider. Creates
homes and provides services for social benefit
• Linklaters
– Pro-bono advice and legal work
Why invest
• Use your savings to release up-front, tax-free
interest to give to your chosen cause
• Know where your money goes: a very low risk,
ethical investment
• Allia is a charitable organisation, so no
interest spent on bonuses or share dividends
– only enough to cover low running costs
What others say
“It is a marvellous alternative way to
give. For people who don’t have
significant amounts to give but do have
some capital they’re not getting much
return on, they can put it to more
effective use in a charitable bond.

use to strengthen the local economy
at modest cost and minimal risk.”
