“100% Perfect Effort”
December 2014
Issue #1
A thought from the bench ...
Growing up the celebration of Christmas was all about family. It seems as I
sit and listen to this years group of players that many of them have that
unique connection to Christmas. As a team we will strive this year to become
a second family for all our players and coaches. Our goal this season comes
from the movie “When The Game Stands Tall” and it states:
“100% Perfect Effort”
We know as a team each and every part of our journey both on and off the
court deserves that “perfect effort” so we can walk away knowing we have
given our best and we are proud to represent our school, our team and most
importantly ourselves!
To all our community supporters we wish you a
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We are so
grateful for your constant support as we explore
our passions through basketball!

Christmas Time!
By Cassie Aston
Ever since I was in diapers, my family has celebrated Christmas with my grandparents. Seven of us staying in one house can be a little crowded and we always had a fight for food, but it’s what makes the memories worth it!
We would spend Christmas Eve watching Christmas movies and getting way
too competitive playing games. Then on Christmas morning my brothers and I
would wake up early to try and sneak a peek at who got the biggest and the most
presents. But we were always too noisy and everyone would wake up and convince us to wait because they would make us pancakes. Next, we would have one
of the three kids as a designated ‘Santa’ that would hand out everyone’s gifts and
take pictures and one person every Christmas would get socks and Rolo’s as a
joke gift.
After getting through the gift giving, we would have lunch and spend the
afternoon trying to figure out how to use all of our new toys. Finally, we would
have our huge turkey dinner, visit, and enjoy having the whole family together.

An Ecuadorian Christmas
Story
Imagine a Christmas away from your family. Being a Rotary Exchange Student from Ecuador
I get to experience a whole new meaning, and traditions with my host family; which is amazing. Traditions that you all know very well, so now I’ll let you know how Christmas is in my
country, Ecuador.
Most of the population is Catholic; therefore, we celebrate Christmas doing a “Novena” to Jesus.
This means that for 9 nights we pray, beginning on December 16th, where each night we tell some
major acts about Jesus’ birth. This is usually done with family, friends and always with the companion of Christmas Carols, hot chocolate and snacks.
The family celebrates on December 24th at night with dinner and the giving of gifts.
My family specifically, all go to my grandmother’s house. We are a huge family, totaling 40 people,
my mom has 7 siblings. After the dinner each independent family has to do some sort of show to
entertain the night such as a short sketch, a choreography, or sing a song. After all of this we play
Secret Santa with the whole family and exchange gifts. Then we dance until the next morning.

I’m international student from Japan. I will write about my
Japanese Christmas.
I was really surprised when I heard celebration of Christmas in
Canada because it always sounds like really big, but Japanese
Christmas is not so big. New Years Day is the biggest celebration
in Japan so I’m really exited first Canadian Christmas.
My birthday is also December 25th so my family always holds two
parties on same day, which are Christmas day and birthday
party. However, we don’t meet relatives on this day. In my
family’s case, we usually invite my few best friends and we just
eat little bit big meal such as chicken, cheese fondue and cake,
etc. Every one ask me, “How many presents do you get every
year, one or two?” when I told them that my birthday is
Christmas. I can get two presents every year. My parents have a
reason that I can get two presents. My mother has three sisters
and her family was not wealthy, so she had never gotten
Christmas present when she was kid. She was sad. My father
knows about this story and I’m lucky person, which I’m only
child so my parents don’t want I will be sad when it is Christmas
day. I moved when heard this story from them. I really
appreciate them.
My friends think, “My birthday is boring.” because I just can get
one present, but it is not right. My birthday is the best
celebration in the world.

Christmas

Christmas is about family, friends, and faith. Coming from a very
close-knit family, I have so many memories and traditions; my
family starts the holiday season off by going out and cutting
down our own Christmas tree. Throughout the upcoming weeks
we have many parties and events for our extended family to all
get together. On Christmas Eve, everyone meets at our house
after church, and Christmas morning we have brunch at my
Grandma’s house. Boxing Day is my brother’s birthday so we
have one more family gathering. In this busy world we all live in
today it is so important to relax and enjoy this hectic season.
Enjoy Christmas for what it’s really about- whatever that it is for
you and your family.
“It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air”

Christmas time in our family we spend losts of
time with family and bonding. On Christmas eve
we go to my grandmas house (dads mom) for a
polish dinner with a lot of different food. We also
open the presents an cards from her while we
are there. After that we go back home and we
open our forst present from my parents. Usually
its pajamas. On Christmas morning when we all
wake up my nanny (moms mom) comes over and
first we open all the gifts in our stockings. After
that we start opening the rest of our presents
from family and friends. After all that is done we
go over to nannys house and she cooks a big turkey dinner for my family, her, and my uncle and
aunty. I love Christmas time because of all the
food and good family time!!
One Of My Christmas Traditions
Our family has many Christmas Traditions that we do every
year, however one of my favorite traditions is watching Elf. We
eagerly wait until my older sister is home for the holidays and we
choose the evening that we will watch one of our favorite
Christmas movies. This is a tradition has been going on for years.
Elf is one of our all time favorite Christmas movies and it
never gets old!
Wishing you and yours a Very Merry Christmas
&
A Happy New Year!
Christmas
By Lacey Reay
Christmas has always been a really crazy time
for our family. It’s always amazing though. On
Christmas morning I pass out the stockings to
my family, and we open them together, we even
have a little stocking for my dog Bandit. Then
we take turns opening presents. Once we’re done, we get ready and go
down to my Grandmas house. We have a really big family, so we always
have all of our Christmas celebrations at my Grandma’s house. We have a
big Christmas Eve dinner at her house, and all of my cousins show up and
we go tobogganing until dark, and then we use the skidoos to pull sleds so
we can see. That’s always been my favorite part. Then for Christmas, we
each buy for one family and Grandma, and everyone puts them under her
tree and we go down there to open presents Christmas morning after we
open our own at home. After we pass the presents around and open them
together, we have a massive pancake breakfast and visit. Those are some
of my favorite Christmas traditions.
