Since 1970, the world has celebrated April 22 as Earth Day, a time to bring environmental awareness and protection into the spotlight. Many communities honor the day with rallies or festivals. If you’re looking to contribute, there are plenty of ways to get involved and leave the planet a little better than you found it. Here are a few: Take an intergenerational nature walk. Go for a nature walk with your grandchildren or other youngsters and share your favorite parts of nature. Bring along a trash bag and pick up any litter you see along the way. Plant a legend. Jelly beans are widely believed to have originated from Turkish delight, a candy made of cornstarch and sugar that is similar to the soft, gel-like center of a jelly bean. Jordan almonds, a type of candied almond with a hard outer shell, may also have been an inspiration. An unknown American candy maker created the first jelly beans in the mid-1800s, and in the 1860s, they were marketed to soldiers serving in the Civil War. The protective, non-sticky outer shell and small size made them easy to carry in pockets. Jelly beans quickly became a popular penny candy and were the first candy to be operating as “green” as possible. Brainstorm together for ideas to reduce, reuse and recycle. Lead a letter writing charge. Contact your local or state governments about ways to protect or improve the environment where you live. Encourage others to do the same. sold by weight rather than by piece. About 16 billion jelly beans are produced every year. Depending on the manufacturer, it can take seven to 21 days to make a jelly bean. Once the gooey center is formed, the bean undergoes a process called “panning,” when colors, flavors and several layers of sugar are applied, creating the outer shell. All About Easter Playing With Marbles So many toys these days are electronic, with lots of fancy bells and whistles. But one very simple toy that has been around for centuries still has millions of fans: marbles. Played for millennia, marbles were used in ancient Egypt and are mentioned in Roman literature. Marbles are made from all types of materials: marble, alabaster, agate, porcelain, clay, china, crystal, glass, stone, ivory, pottery and ceramic, and can either be made by hand or machine. Currently the world’s largest manufacturer of playing marbles is Vacor de Mexico. The company makes 90 percent of the world’s marbles—more than 12 million of the little glass balls are produced each day. Many versions of marble games are played all around the world. One common version involves drawing a circle in the dirt, with players taking turns to knock other players’ marbles out of the circle with their own marble. Once enjoyed all over playgrounds and backyards, with widespread press coverage of national tournaments, the popularity of playing marbles has dwindled in the age of television. But marble collecting is still practiced by more than 400 million people around the world, with many collector conventions and websites dedicated to live auctions of marbles. Easter, one of the most important holidays in Christianity, celebrates the central event of the Christian faith: the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. This event is significant to Christians because, through his death and resurrection, Jesus suffered for the sins of the world, yet was able to overcome death. Easter is observed on the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox (the first day of spring). According to the Bible, the events of the crucifixion and resurrection occurred during the Jewish Passover, a springtime celebration. Easter is preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and repentance that begins on Ash Wednesday. The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday, the day that Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. The week before Easter is called Holy Week. During Holy Week, Christians observe Maundy Thursday, when the Last Supper with Jesus and his disciples took place; and Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion. The resurrection is then celebrated on Easter Sunday. Children often participate in Easter egg hunts and look forward to visits from the Easter Bunny, who is said to deliver candy and eggs during the night. Eggs and rabbits were once used as fertility symbols during ancient springtime festivals, but now represent new life when associated with the Easter holiday.
