New Year: New Passions
As you may know, my wife Linda
and I are the caretakers of three small
and lively dogs. One of them, Ralph,
has a serious addiction problem... to
carrots. He loves the crunch and
would do almost anything for a raw
carrot. Not cooked carrots mind you,
but raw carrots. This is his passion
and the highlight of his day, standing
up on two paws, waving his front
paws in the air, and making all kinds
of noises in hopes of getting a carrot.
Linda and I are both glad Ralph has
this addiction.
Why? Because this little dog used to
break off branches of our lilac bushes
and chew on them. Then he would
bring in the chewed branches and
leave them all over the house. This
passion of lilac branches would end
up almost killing our two lilac bushes
out back. But when the carrots
started, we found that the lilac branch
Page , Volume 67, Issue 1
chewing stopped. And we said that
this was good... at least for Linda
and I. What happened was that the
good passion superseded the not
so good passion.
I think that this “replacement
strategy” can also be helpful
spiritually as well. So try in this
new year to cultivate a new
passion for learning about your
faith, or for more regular worship,
or of developing ways to invite
people to join you at Trinity. And,
in the process it may be that some
of those not so helpful passions
may become less enticing while
you put energy and time into new
and more helpful ones!
Wishing you a Spirit filled new
year...

Very GRATEFUL – The boys and girls brought in some of their favorite foods to
donate to the food pantry in November. They brought in a variety of soups,
vegetables and fruits, with macaroni and cheese being the dominant item with
24 boxes! The children brought in over 66 pounds of food!
Our 4’s classes brought in money they earned at home to buy things for the Toys
for Tots program. The two classes went to the bank to cash in their coins, then
to Target to look for bargains. Together they brought in almost $150 to spend
on toys. What a great lesson in giving!

SUBMITTED BY JAN PETERSON
“When Lightning Struck; The Story of
Martin Luther” by Danika Cooley is one
of the recent additions to the Trinity
Library. Found in the Biography section
of the library it is a historical novel on
Martin Luther beginning in 1483 when
he is a young boy until his death in
1546. The book is written to captivate
teens and adults about the struggles
Martin Luther experienced. Martin
Luther had to choose whether to follow
in the path his father had laid out for
him as a lawyer with the wife his father
had also chosen or follow God's
calling. We all know the answer to that
BIG question, but the book delves into
the emotional personal struggle Martin
Luther experienced before and after
nailing his theses on the door in 1517.
With 2017 marking the 500 year
Anniversary of this remarkable event,
why not begin the year by learning more
about Martin Luther? “When Lightning
Struck” is a great place to start, but stop
in the library and check out all the other
new additions about the Reformation.
The church staff asks for your help. We would like to keep members
contact information as current as possible. Please notify the church
office of any corrections to your address, e-mail or phone number.

Glaucoma
Awareness Month
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that
damage the eye’s optic nerve and can
result in vision loss and blindness.
However, with early detection and
treatment, you can often protect your
eyes against serious vision loss.
The optic nerve is a bundle of more
than 1 million nerve fibers. It connects
the retina to the brain. The retina is the
light-sensitive tissue at the back of the
eye. A healthy optic nerve is necessary
for maintaining good vision. Several
studies have shown that eye pressure is
a major risk for optic nerve damage. In
open-angle glaucoma, the fluid that
flows continuously in and out of the
anterior chamber and that nourishes
tissue passes too slowly and some fluid
builds up, causing increased pressure
inside the eye. Another risk factor for
optic nerve damage is high blood
pressure. Glaucoma can also develop
without increased eye pressure. Some
people are at a higher risk of
developing glaucoma than others:
African Americans over age 40,
everyone over age 60, and people
with a family history of glaucoma.
Glaucoma is detected through a
comprehensive dilated eye exam.
Your eye care professional will
determine the frequency of needed
exams. There is no cure for
glaucoma, but immediate treatment
for early-stage, open-angle glaucoma
can delay progression of the disease.
Treatments include medicines, laser
trabeculoplasty, conventional
surgery or a combination of any of
these.
Music Update
If you have lost some sight from
glaucoma, ask your eye care
professional about low vision
services and devices that may help
you make the most of your remaining
vision. There are local support groups
and services available for vision
impaired individuals.
I am pleased to let you know
that we have made considerable progress regarding
our music search process.
Three of our four open positions are now filled.
Luke 11:34 “Your eye is the lamp of
your body……
Blessings and Good health to you in

Have You Tried This?
Spiritual Tips for Ordinary Days
Focus less on the time, and more on the
act of prayer.
Many Christians have heard of the
testimonies of men like John Hyde or
George Muller, who would spend hours
each day in prayer. Martin Luther
famously said,
“If I fail to spend two hours in prayer each
morning, the devil gets the victory through
the day. I have so much business I cannot
get on without spending three hours daily
in prayer.”
If that’s true, then what about the rest of
us? Should we feel ashamed
for not spending hours each day in
prayer? What about 1 Thessalonians 5:17—
the command to “pray without ceasing?”
If judged by that measure, even the
famous prayer warriors fall short.
Our problem comes when we gauge the
success of our prayer life by the time that
we spend doing it.
1
Thessalonians 5:17 does not tell us that a
really good prayer life consists of no less
than 45 minutes each day, or that we
somehow have to be praying every single
moment of time. Instead, the verse tells
us to do two things: 1) Pray frequently
(compare with Romans 1:9), and 2)
never give up upon praying (Luke 18:18).
When we make time our effort in prayer,
we put up a barrier to our actually
praying at all. What about breathing a
prayer to God as you step outside and
see the sun? What about thanking God
for his grace, as you encounter a
moment of temptation? What about a
prayer for patience as you change a
dirty diaper, or cope with a crying child?
What about a prayer for kindness as you
work under a frustrating superior? What
about an unspoken prayer for wisdom
as you enter a counseling situation?
Let us pray often, but not wallow in guilt
for not praying hours each day. Even
George Muller said, “[I pray for] hours
every day, but I live in the spirit of
prayer. I pray as I walk, and when I lie
down, and when I arise. And the
answers are always coming.”
