RESURRECTION Our story began in 1966. Fifty years later Maestro Edelstein and the WSO will salute our past years of music making and serving Williamsport and the region with an outstanding season. Join us as we celebrate! Welcome back former conductors including Robin Fountain. Thrill again to one of the most popular family shows with mime Dan Kamin. Experience Mahler’s transcendent Symphony #2, the ‘Resurrection.’ Be among the first to hear the premier of a work by the world-renowned composer, Christopher Theofanidis– commissioned especially to celebrate WSO’s first fifty years. This is only a snapshot as to why you, our dear subscriber, need to reserve your seat and look forward to an exceptional celebratory season and the next fifty years! 50& Counting! BROADWAY Opening Night Our 50th anniversary celebrations begin with a big splash! Former music director, Robin Fountain, returns to conduct the overture to May Night by Rimsky-Korsakov – one of the composer’s lighter and more comic operas full of fantastic folk characters. Andrew Rammon solos for one of the most beloved cello concertos written by the English composer, Sir Edward Elgar. The concert closes with another Russian giant: Alexander Borodin‘s Symphony No. 2 – arguably his greatest full-scale symphonic piece with exotic tunes, rich harmonies, and colorful orchestration. Holiday Concert Concert Celebration Be prepared for many surprises and an exciting evening celebrating the holiday season! Famous mime, Dan Kamin, returns as the guest artist for this concert and will delight us with his fun-filled clown acts. The orchestra will accompany him with well known tunes including your favorite holiday songs. In addition, we will feature the Young Artist Competition winner and a side-byside performance with the symphony’s youth orchestra! A concert not to be missed! 50th! HAPPY Resurrection Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, the ‘Resurrection’ – without a doubt the pinnacle of the nineteenth century symphonic music – will be performed for the first time in Williamsport. Combining an enlarged orchestra with several local choirs including the Williamsport Civic Chorus and the Lycoming College Choir, this monumental work will leave you breathless and mesmerized. A unique opportunity to hear the best musicians and singers in the region all united to perform one of the greatest, most profound, and transcendent symphonies of all time. Sarah Shafer, an up-and-coming soprano star will join us as one of the vocal soloists. Broadway Celebration Anticipating Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, we will perform selections from his West Side Story, perhaps the most successful musical ever written. This love story still touches our hearts and is never dated! More drama follows with love songs from Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera. Delightful tunes from Show Boat, Carousel and others will complete a program that will leave you nostalgic and inspired. Featured singers are local stars Emily Wertz, Bernadette Boerckel and the return of Williamsport native Brian Mextorf. Happy 50th Be among the first to hear the premier of a work by the world-renowned American composer, Christopher Theofanidis – WSO’s first fifty years. Haydn’s early Symphony No. 6, Le Matin, a piece played by the first Williamsport Symphony in 1915, happily returns in our season finale. The magnificent Piano Concerto No. 5, the Emperor, by Beethoven, is the master’s last one but definitely his most mature and virtuosic. Pianist Christopher Guzman, winner of many international and national competitions, will be the soloist. We couldn’t finish our season without another big splash and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe is the perfect choice to celebrate life, pure love and joy!
