Welcome to the Hillmorton High School Adult Education Programme for 2017
Nau mai,haere mai ki te Akoraka o te Hapori o te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka.
We aim to provide affordable and accessible education for adults in the local and wider community
All our classes are held late afternoon, in the evenings, or at weekends, and are taught by teachers who are very experienced
and knowledgeable in their field of expertise. Our teachers are also experienced in teaching adults.
Our classes have limited enrolments – classes have a maximum class size of between six and fifteen participants, apart from
the Life Drawing and Yoga classes which will be slightly larger.
Unless otherwise stated, all courses are held at Hillmorton High School.

LIFE DRAWING
Tutor: Alan Gunn
Life drawing is the drawing and study of the undraped human figure both male and
female.
Monday Master class:
This is an untutored class for experienced artists.
The intention is to create a group of artists, which is cohesive, but individually selfmotivated.
The paper is provided if required, the time and space as in the past, but the tutor
intends to get some drawing of his own done along with the group.
Tuesday Class:
This class will run subject to numbers being sufficient to justify it.
It will be tutored, assistance and advice is given on the basis of individual need,
rather than a prescribed regimen which all are expected to follow. Students wishing
to join the group will find support and encouragement, and as with the Monday
group, have the option of having paper supplied for an additional $30, or bringing
their own.

Alan Gunn worked as Head of Art at Hillmorton High School for many years, teaching
Design and Photography to senior students. He left teaching in 2003 to work as a
freelance graphic designer and photographer and has considerable experience in a
wide range of graphic productions. He considers himself a graphic artist, exhibiting and
selling drawings and paintings, as well as mixed media work.
FITNESS AND HEALTH
Meditative Yoga
Tutor: Pauline Thomson
Gentle, enjoyable and refreshing, this style of Yoga is ideal for mature bodies, fuller
figures and beginners. Sessions are designed to promote relaxation, flexibility
and vitality; and to expand awareness, intuition, and understanding. Relaxation,
breathing, and mindfulness are integral aspects of each class. Postures/sequences
are adapted to suit individual ability, encourage body and mind to unite in sensitive,
responsive partnership.
Pauline has been facilitating Yoga and Meditation classes for more than 25 years.
She has an IYTA(NZ) Teaching Diploma and is a certificated Reiki (3A) practitioner.
As well as studying with Teachers and Masters of different Yoga and Meditation
Traditions for over 25 years, Pauline has explored other modalities including
Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, Edu-kinesiology, Kum Nye, Jin Shin Jyutsu,
Meridian Exercises, rhythmic movement, body work, and accu-pressure. Relevant
aspects are incorporated into sessions.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Bring yoga/camping mat, a light rug and water to

Pauline Thomson worked for many years in the field of mental health, and has been
facilitating Yoga and Meditation classes in the community for over 25 years. She has
the IYTA Teaching Diploma, Reiki Practitioner (3A degree) and has studied with Tutors
and Masters of various Yoga and Meditation Traditions for over 30 years. From rural
to urban, cowgirl to Wren, wife to mother, widow to nana, Pauline’s life still unfolds
in varied and interesting ways. From her own experience Pauline knows the value of
Hatha Yoga.
Qigong
Tutor: Vanessa Lukes
Qigong (pronounced ‘Chi Kung’), is an ancient Chinese exercise that uses
movement, mind and Qi (life force or energy). Related to Tai Chi, it has a focus
on improving health and life. In this course we will learn gentle exercises to guide
the mind to draw in and replenish Qi. The movements increase flexibility, balance
and coordination, the Qi heals and energises, and the whole activity brings deep
relaxation and a calm and focused mind. We will also explore the nature of Qi and
how to harness this energy in everyday life.
Suitable for any level of fitness. Wear comfortable clothing.

Vanessa started learning and practicing Qigong 13 years ago. After experiencing
dramatic improvements in her health, she trained as a Yuan Tze Ren Xue Qigong
Master and Qi therapist. She now utilises her professional teaching background to
teach Yuan Gong Qigong, and loves helping people to improve their own health and
lives.

Beginners French for Travellers

Are you planning a trip to France, New Caledonia or Tahiti? Would you like to be
able to order a meal, book accommodation or buy something from a market? Our
French tutor could help you prepare for your travels so you can make the most out
of your stay. This course is also suitable for those who are not travelling, but would

Berangere Suhard was born in France and has had extensive public speaking
experience as a project manager with a City Council in her home country. She moved
to New Zealand five years ago and now works with people who speak French as
their first language. Berangere teaches tailor-made classes to suit different levels and
expectations, using resources to help her students discover French culture and learn
the French language.

For people who can already speak some French (post-intermediate to advanced)
and would like to practise and improve their knowledge and skills with the

Johanna Lescure was born in the south of France and after completing a Bachelor
Degree in French Language and Theatre she came to New Zealand. After one
year teaching French at the University of Waikato and some months at the Alliance
Francais, she returned to France to gain her French as a Second Language Masters
Degree. Now back in New Zealand, Johanna wants to help students of all levels learn
the French language and discover the French culture.

Spanish for Travellers / Spanish Beginners

Are you planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country? Imagine how much more
rewarding the experience would be if you are able to order a meal, buy something
in a shop, ask for directions and have a simple conversation with the locals in
Spanish. This course is for complete beginners, no previous knowledge of the
language is required, and is also suitable for those who are not travelling but would
like to learn the basics of the Spanish language. This course teaches skills of basic
conversational Spanish, as well as cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries
and students can move on to the Level Two course later in the year.

Denise is from Argentina and has been living in New Zealand since 2002. She has
been teaching Spanish in Christchurch for over ten years. Denise teaches fun and
interesting classes at different levels and makes sure all her students enjoy and learn
Spanish in a great environment.
Denise has her own events company, Viva la Vida Ltd., through which she organises
Latin events in Canterbury. She is also President of the Aotearoa Hispanic Association,
an association dedicated to promoting Latin American and Spanish culture in New
Zealand. She has a natural empathy for people and enjoys roles that relate to her
energetic lifestyle.

Introduction to Teaching Adults - Certificate
Course

This is an introduction to adult learning and is designed for current and potential
teachers of adults in both a classroom and workplace setting. The course covers
how adults learn, group building skills, planning, evaluation and the presentation of
a mini lesson. It runs for two consecutive Saturdays. To gain the ASCEA Adult Tutor
Training Certificate it is essential to attend the entire fifteen hour course.

Christine Philpott has been working in Adult Education for over thirty years, firstly as
a tutor and teacher of adult students, then as an adult education programme coordinator and a trainer of tutors/trainers/teachers working in the adult education sector.
She is an ASCEA accredited tutor trainer. Rhys Taylor trained in adult/community
education at Sheffield University, United Kingdom, where he completed a postgraduate
certificate course. He is an experienced Community Educator, Sustainability
Consultant, accredited Natural Step Advisor; writer & researcher. Both believe that
lifelong learning comes in many guises and are passionate about the value of providing
opportunities for further education for adults in the community and the workplace.

Application Course

Since 1993 award winning Christchurch based Makeup Artist and Personal Style
Consultant Joanna Giles, has been teaching and helping women to look great and
feel fantastic. Joanna was a founding member of the New Zealand Federation of
Image Professionals (NZFIP) and is owner of ‘Love Your Look’ (The Feel-Good Style
System for Real Women). Joanna believes that “every woman is beautiful. Beauty is
not a particular size, age or skin or hair colour.” “Every woman deserves to like the way
she looks NOW! Every woman whether she is a size 6 or 30+ can look great and feel
fantastic by highlighting her assets and quietly camouflaging any bits she’s not quite
so keen on.” Joanna uses the ‘tricks of the trade’ to show women just how great they
can look and make each person she works with smile. She dreams of helping every
woman learn what works for her, how to shop for it, and how to put it together. Joanna
has used the research skills developed while gaining her BA in Classics at Canterbury
University, to create Personal Presentation training courses that have been presented
in local training institutions and in Adult and Community Education courses since
2004. She spends her days helping women look great and feel fantastic with Personal
Shopping Trips, Wardrobe Dejunks, Training other Image Consultants, providing Skin
care and Makeup applications and teaching Makeup Application and Style Courses.

CRAFT AND TEXTILES
Patchwork and Quilting for Beginners
Tutor: Kay Barber
Enjoy working with fabrics and combining colours to make a quilt. Learn how to use
‘strip piecing’ (using the sewing machine), applique and other techniques to create
a quilt that will have impact. You will make your own quilt, using colours and fabrics
of your choice. When we receive your enrolment we will contact you with a list of the
materials required. This class will be held concurrently with the Textile Art class and
class members are welcome to do a mix of both. A Patchwork and Quilting Class is
also held at a venue in Burnside, 4.00pm – 6.00pm on Mondays. Please contact

Fabric Art for Beginners
Tutor: Kay Barber
This course teaches many techniques to encourage and inspire an artistic flair. Start
with plain fabric and learn how to use dyes, paints and embellishments, including
stitching, to create your design. This class will be held concurrently with the
Patchwork class and class members are welcome to do a mix of both.
There is an extra cost of $5, payable to the tutor, for paints used during the course.

Kay Barber has a passion for working with fabric and colour and has made many
quilts and articles using different quilting techniques. She has successfully completed
courses in Tailoring and Design as well as Patchwork courses. She has also completed
courses in Adult teaching. Kay has taught quilting for many years and also runs
private classes for more experienced patchwork and quilting enthusiasts.

Metalwork
Work on your own project in a well-equipped workshop, using your own materials.
Small projects, larger projects: the choice is yours. Each class will be held for
two and a half hours, allowing you time to make progress with the guidance of an
experienced tutor as needed. Beginners and those more experienced working with
metal are all welcome

Stewart Shadbolt and Mike Inns are both very experienced teachers of Metalwork and
have been teaching adult classes for many years.
They are familiar with the safe use of all the equipment available in the workshop and
the techniques you will need to complete your projects. They will give you advice on
your choice of project if you need it.
