The student understands the role of real and mythical heroes in shaping the culture of communities, the state, and the nation. The student is expected to: A identify and compare the heroic deeds of state and national heroes, including Hector P. Garcia , and James A. Lovell, and individuals such as Harriet Tubman, Juliette Gordon Low, Todd Beamer, Ellen Ochoa, John “Danny” Olivas, and other contemporary heroes; B identify and analyze the heroic deeds of individuals, including military and first responders such as the Four Chaplains. Students add info on where their families originated from, country of origin, etc. • Use authors/artists such as Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tomie dePaola, etc. to make connections to community, family and cultural heritage. Research books/artwork by these authors and artists, discovering their cultural significance and contributions. • Students choose a book or character and make a flip book, T‐chart or Venn diagram comparing their own family or community to the family/community depicted in the book. • Art gallery‐students create an artwork (mural, collage, etc.) displaying important cultural aspects of their own lives and families.
