CSJ Newsline for the friends of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Albany Province Winter 2012 Volume 29, Number 1 A Blessing, A Voice, A Vowed Woman S ister Marilyn Vassallo has been a member of the Albany Province of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet since 1964. For the past eighteen years, her home has been in the Deep South, first serving the people of the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama, and then the people of the Diocese of Shreveport, Louisiana. “I have loved my work in the South largely because I’m in touch on a regular basis with some of the poorest individuals and families in our nation. What little I can do to help them to live life more fully, I’ll do,” she said. Approximately 4 percent of the population of the 16 civil parishes that constitute the Diocese of Shreveport is Catholic. This makes ministry all the more challenging. Recently, Marilyn spent five days in Lake Providence and Oak Grove leading a mission retreat. Lake Providence in North Louisiana is the poorest city in the United States and is still struggling with the divides of racism and poverty. Sister spoke to these issues with courage, calling the people to change. “Because of Sister Marilyn’s unwavering mission to serve people with justice, compassion and charity, many have called her the conscience of the Diocese,” said Anne Jones of Shreveport. “For me,” continued Anne, “she is my teacher, my confidant, and my friend. I know that my life has been incredibly enriched by her presence.” Jill Braniff, Finance Director for the Diocese of Shreveport, commends Marilyn for her good work among the laity. “Sister Marilyn continues to be a true advocate for the laity, especially for women in Shreveport. As a co-worker, she has been a great resource and educator throughout the ten plus years we have worked together. She is truly an asset to our Diocese,” stated Jill. Randy Tiller, Director of Mission Effectiveness for the Diocese of Shreveport, describes the growing impact of Marilyn on the wider community. “Sister Marilyn’s influence in the community of Shreveport-Bossier and the entire Diocese of Shreveport continues to grow with each presentation, each conference, each tribunal workshop, each mission, each class, and each spiritual direction. In no way has she put her light under a bushel basket nor has she buried her talents. Instead, she has done just the opposite. She has taken the light of her soul and used it as a beacon to lead and to teach, thus generously sharing her many talents and gifts.” Randy adds, “We have talked many times, and I have come to appreciate her honesty, sincerity, and commitment to religious life. Her spirituality is deep and abiding.” At the Motor Cycle fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital, Marilyn rides as an enthusiastic passenger. Theresa Thompson, retired Pastoral Assistant at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Madison, Alabama, recalls Marilyn’s (Continued on page 4) CSJ Newsline FROM THE PROVINCE DIRECTOR Winter 2012 Volume 29 Number 1 Dear Friends, The Christmas lights and decorations are just packed away and quickly we are facing Valentine’s Day. How did it get to be February? The swift passage of time is a reminder to take time and focus on those we love. Scripture tells us “Where your treasure is there also will your heart be.” (Lk 12:34) The late Pedro Arupe SJ, states it this way, “… what you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what breaks your heart, what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide everything.” As Sisters of St. Joseph our Mission Statement puts it this way; “passionate for the mission of Jesus we come together to serve all persons. With a distinctive spirit of hospitality and a particular concern for the poor, we witness to the Gospel message by being a unifying and reconciling presence to a world in need.” One of our “passions” in the congregation is our love for our Sisters in Peru. Recently, Sister Jeanne Marie Gocha, from our Albany Province, left for a three month visit to spend time with the young women in formation. As a congregation we are arranging for these kinds of visits so that sisters from the states will begin building relationship with the sisters in Peru. These young women are the next generation of our congregation’s life and ministry in Peru. They will be involved in the pastoral, educational and social service ministries of the province... This initiative bears witness to the importance we place on relationships. Relationships are core to who we are as we continue the ministry of Jesus. Your relationship with us as family, friends and partners in ministry is vitally important to us. You help us to continue to reach out to serve a world in need. Your friendship and generosity to us is a treasure. We are so grateful to you and will continue to hold you in our hearts. Gratefully, Sister Mary Anne Rodgers, CSJ Province Director 2 CSJ Newsline CSJ Newsline is published three times a year by the Albany Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet for our families and friends. We are most grateful to you for all your support and we encourage you to read the report and realize how important your help has been in assisting us to live our lives and our mission. With your help the renovations on B wing are well on the way to Sister Carol A. Rohloff, CSJ completion which should occur by June this year. The St. Joseph’s Day Annual Development Director Appeal this March will be the last appeal for this purpose. You will notice that bequests have been a major source of income for us this fiscal year. We are truly blessed in so many ways. We try to recognize this in our daily lives but every so often we receive a truly marvelous “sit up and take notice” reminder when we receive a bequest. Some of our very well to do friends who passed remembered us with large bequests; some friends with smaller amounts and some with the widow’s mite of cash. No matter the amount it all adds up. These good people have entrusted us to continue to share the faith that sustained them and hold to values they themselves held while they were among us. When I think of their love of the CSJ community and generosity, I am reminded of St. Therese “the Little Flower” who said her greatest desire was to spend heaven doing good on earth. Their good works live on after them and we certainly use their gifts well in caring for our older sisters and in continuing the “mission” – the mission of Jesus. It was good to see so many of you who were able to attend our annual Christmas Season Liturgy for all our donors. If you were unable to attend I have included the picture below. It is of “The Donor Tree” which was located in the main corridor at the Provincial House. All your tags that you returned with your intentions were hung on the tree. We prayed for you during the Christmas season. Now that the season is completed and the tree is down we have distributed the tags to the Sisters and Associates throughout the Province. You and your intentions will be remembered by them in prayer throughout 2012. Don’t forget to order your tickets for the Ziti Dinner. We love seeing you at this FUN EVENT!! Blessings, Sister Carol A. Rohloff, CSJ Development Director Winter 2012 CSJ Newsline 3 (Cont. from page 1) service as Associate Judge in the Diocesan Tribunal in Birmingham. “Sister came to Birmingham with the spirit of Vatican II on her mind. Her openness and enthusiasm, along with her faith and love, brought many in the Diocese to a richer appreciation of the faith she ardently professed. Her teaching was so credible. My family and I consider Marilyn a true friend. Actually, I think of Marilyn as the sister I never had. Her impact on my family and others is lasting. This Yankee worked her way into many Southern hearts and has remained there all these years,” remarked Theresa. The Advisory Board for Religious of Shreveport. Pat Cairns, CSJ is standing in the middle. Marilyn is to the far right. Marilyn is Director of Canonical Services for the Diocese of Shreveport. Her department includes the Marriage Tribunal and the Office of Mediation Services. As a canon lawyer, she wears many hats. She is a member of the Canon Law Professionals Firm where she works with other canon lawyers providing Church legal services to dioceses and religious communities throughout the United States. As a member of the Canon Law Society of America (CLSA), Marilyn has presented seminars involving advocacy regarding the rights of the faithful and workshops on the formation of advocates to assist local tribunals. In addition to her canonical responsibilities, Sister serves as Coordinator for Religious of the Diocese, Professor in the Greco Institute (an adult theology program connected with the University of Dallas), and Secretary of the Board of Directors of the newly formed Catholic Charities of Shreveport. When not involved in ministry, Marilyn loves being home where she and Pat Cairns (also a CSJ Sister of the Albany Province, who ministers as Assistant to the Bishop of Shreveport) enjoy a healthy community life filled with laughter and challenging discussions. Her hobbies include cooking, reading and painting. She loves all the diverse wildlife of Louisiana. She can often be found playing with her Cockatiel “Queenie” and with Pat’s Golden Retriever, “Riley.” Several Sisters of Saint Joseph have wended their way to Shreveport to enjoy the spirit of the South. In the last two years, Chris Pologa, CSJ has joined this Louisiana extension of the Albany Province. Both Marilyn and Pat go to Baton Rouge to attend lectures with Chris and she joins them in Shreveport for holidays and major football games. “I’m grateful to the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Superiors, friends in community, and others have prayerfully supported me throughout my many years of Judging “Religion Bowl” for Catholic Schools. ministry. I’m especially thankful for the solid spiritual and educational foundation I’ve received which has enabled me to serve better the dear neighbor,” stated Sister Marilyn. The 16th Annual CSJ Golf Classic will be held on Monday, May 14, 2012. For many this is the first golf outing of the season and ALL have a wonderful time. Can you close your eyes and remember how your love affair with the beauty and wonder of our Earth started? And what nurtured this love, this Biophilia? I had the opportunity to reflect on this question when I was doing my masters work for a degree in Earth Literacy from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana. What follows is a piece I wrote for one of my classes. My love affair with Earth began at my family home. I am a child of the pines- the New Jersey Pine Barrens. My family has lived there for four generations. We still own our family farm, Old Homestead Farm. My great-grandfather, Francesco Gatto, cleared the 30 acres by hand and my dad reclaimed the land when he bought the farm in 1946. The Pine Barrens is this eco-region that I know intimately. It is here that I have tromped in the woods with my dad, learning the trees and shrubs and animals. “Bull pines” (pitch pines), cedars, bear brush, cranberries, pitcher plants, scrub oaks, cat briers, teaberries and lady’s slippers are my heritage. White-tail deer, rabbit, bobwhite, whip-o-wills, turkey vultures, weasels, even the mice that infested our chicken feed, these were neighbors. The slow moving, tannic tainted, “cedar water” rivers of the Mullica and Batsto delighted and refreshed me in the summer. I can smell their teaearthiness. The taste of artesian well water: cool, clear sweetness that carries a bit of iron has quenched my thirst. Walking in the woods in sand just like at the beach teased me into learning the geological history of the pines. The Pines weren’t really “Barren;” they were alive with an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. The woods would share these gifts, if I took the time and patience to be aware, and to be quiet there. It was here that my relationship with Earth was formed: planting, weeding, harvesting tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn, blueberries, raspberries and sweet potatoes. Here I ran, barefoot, in the cool, damp furrows that my dad cut in the spring earth. I have felt this earth in my hands and I have known it in every season. I learned that the earth is a gift and she needs to be treasured and cared for, because whatever you do to earth you do to yourself. The lessons of using cover crops to protect our precious topsoil and to enrich it were taught to me every Fall as rye or turnips were planted. Dad used hedges to ring the field and protect the topsoil from the winter winds. Table scraps, vegetable clippings, leaves raked from the lawn all went back to the earth. In her wisdom, she knew how to turn all “refuse” into rich soil. I was taught that seeds can be gathered up, like family jewels, and saved for the next spring planting. Seeds are miracles: something looking dead that springs to life. They were put into the ground with a steady, almost monotonous rhythmic dance: step, one, two, drop seed in, cover, pat down, step one, two… Rows that were nine hundred feet long taught me the dance well. And they taught me to pray that the crows would stay away! I learned that rain soaks into the soil and brings life to everything and that doesn’t happen when we blacktop the earth. I experienced water coming from wells that were dug at least 100 feet or so into the aquifer (14 trillion gallons) beneath the sandy soils of the pines. Water needed to be conserved; it was too precious to be wasted by poor irrigation practices or by watering lawns or gardens in the heat of the day. My dad taught me that everything in nature had a purpose, even rats and mosquitoes. He never killed anything unless it was a necessity, like the time a weasel got into the chicken coop or a five foot pine snake crawled into the basement. He taught me that hunters (animal and human ones) are an important part of the food chain, but you had to hunt responsibly- not taking more than the law allowed and always waiting for a clean kill. Trees were venerated. They provided shade and beauty; they cooled your house and yard. Only “damn fools” cut them (Cont. on page 6) Winter 2012 CSJ Newsline 5 (Cont. from page 5) down. My father planted maples, poplar and white pines. We played around a great, 100 year-old American elm in the front yard; we were amazed that its roots went clear to the backyard! My family mourned when it got Dutch elm disease and had to be cut down. We enjoyed our swing that hung from the cherry tree that my great-grand mom planted. I got sent to my room many times for climbing the trees. Now, I have planted holly trees around the yard. They are indigenous to the pines. I also planted the next generation of white pines, to back up the ones my dad planted over 50 years ago. My mom was a city girl, but she worked hard on the farm. She taught me that not all growing was for selling, that it was for sharing. Our table was always open to friends and family. It was a joy to sit for a meal when the pork chops came from the pig I helped to feed all season, the vegetables came from the garden and the sweet potatoes came from the farm. I knew the food, even before it became intimately entwined with me. Earth has been calling to me ever since I was a child and leading me along to the challenge of sharing the great work of living in right relationship with the Earth Community. To share some of the wisdom, joy and challenge of living with Earth I have created three workshops entitled “Encountering Earth: Reclaiming the Human in the Web of Life.” These feature the art of Marion Honors, CSJ, with reflections, poetry, music, sharing, science and stories. You can find out more about the presentations on the website: http://encounteringearth.webs.com/. You can also contact me at 1853 Eastern Parkway, Schenectady, NY, 12309 and ask for a brochure. I would love to do any of these workshops for any group. Love of Earth has been a life-long passion which is always my joy to share! Old Homestead Farm r Reminder... As a local learning group experience, very well-supervised by Loyola, I was able to be certified as a Director of Religious Education while still doing my ministry in the parish. Some years ago I heard that, in the culture and times in which we live, it’s likely that we will have seven different work situations in our lifetime. I guess I’m well on my way! When I entered the Congregation in 1966, I thought I would be a French teacher for my entire “career” life, but after 13 years it became apparent to me that few of my students still had the passion for the language that I did and that maybe it was time for a change. Our province was in need of a new Candidate Director at that time – someone to guide new members through their first two years in community. It seemed a good fit for me and I was delighted that the province leadership agreed. Thus began a wonderful six-year period in my life of coming to know not only new members (and the Temporary Professed during the last three years of my tenure) but the Sisters of the province as well, since those in formation were living by then in local communities rather than a central house. I enjoyed my community service so much that at the end of my six-year term I wished to find someone who would hire me just to listen to people tell their stories and to support them on their spiritual journeys – just what I had been doing! Clearly, employment opportunities of this kind for a former French teacher who had been in religious life for 24 years were not plentiful. Still, I was greatly blessed to be offered a position at St. Anthony of Padua parish in Endicott, NY as director of faith formation. Although I had no formal background in religious education, I was confident because there were coordinators for all of the youth programs so my position was described as supervisory for the youth and developmental for adult programs. During the eight happy years that I spent there, the ministry grew but so did I because of a wonderful Master’s Certificate program called LIMEX (the Loyola Institute for Ministry Extension Program) Winter 2012 Since the summer of 1984 I have lived at The Spiritual Center, a small retreat center in Windsor, NY where at present five CSJs reside (more of that later). One of the great blessings of my life was the willingness of my local community to welcome my mother, a victim of Alzheimer’s disease, to reside in one of the buildings on the Spiritual Center property with me after my father died. It was wonderful to be able to stay with my local community – just across the yard – for the four years that my mother was with us. My (and my local community’s) relationships with my sister and brother also deepened during that time as they often visited to relieve me of her care. When it became imperative to move my mother to a nursing facility, I was grateful to be granted a year of doing the “odd jobs” of a little religious education, a little retreat work and a little too much substitute teaching at the local Catholic high school. Because of that, I was able to oversee my mother’s transition and assure during that first year that her care was excellent. My next eleven years were spent in the Southern Region Office of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Syracuse. The diversity of tasks both on the diocesan staff and in the region made every day an adventure. Writing guidelines for sacramental programs, preparing monthly meetings with parish faith formation personnel, and teaching catechist certification classes was mixed with keeping the finances up to date, meeting one-on-one with struggling parish personnel and making sure we had enough seats on the buses going to Syracuse for the Rite of Election. Always, though, the sustaining force in all we did was the caliber of the prayer that enveloped the twice-monthly meetings of the diocesan staff. As the years progressed and the priest population declined, we found ourselves in the midst of parish mergers and linkages. During that time, I saw a shift in (Continued on page 8) CSJ Newsline 7 (Cont. from page 7) the amount of my time spent with individuals seeking help to negotiate the losses that their parishes were feeling due to the changes. I had earlier completed a 2year certification in mentoring for spiritual direction and was grateful for the skills it gave me for the work that seemed more and more pressing. At the same time I was being asked to do more adult faith formation presentations and parish retreats which I enjoyed a great deal. Thus, in June of 2010 I left my position in the diocesan office and began full-time ministry in spiritual direction and retreat work. I have been very surprised at the diversity of clients who have found me for spiritual direction. Among the denominations of the people I serve are Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Methodists, United Church of Christ members and Unitarian Universalists. It has been a wonderful learning for me of the richness of faith that exists in Christianity and how in the seeking of God, there is little that divides us. While doctrine differs more or less, the hunger for God that I have experienced both in retreat settings and one-on-one with directees is universal and strengthens my own faith as we share. Recently, I realized that it had only taken God twenty years to answer my request for another ministry of listening to and supporting people on the spiritual journey! My local community at the Spiritual Center is a great example of what happened when the Second Vatican Council asked religious communities to go back to the spirit of our founders. What the Sisters of St. Joseph learned from their research was that we were founded “to do all the works of which women are capable and which will benefit the dear neighbor.” Thus five teachers diversified: one became a retreat center administrator (Sr. Elizabeth Michele Newell), one a wood sculptor (Sr. Paula Matthew), one a massage therapist (Sr. Susan Reschke), one a pastoral care worker/photographer (Sr. Clare Pelkey) and me. Life at the Spiritual Center feeds me in many ways. In addition to the sharing of community, we welcome during the months of May through October wonderful people who present and/or participate in diverse workshops on the weekends and those who come for private or directed retreats during the week. The setting is beautiful and we hear frequently of the gratitude of visitors for the peace and healing they find during their stay. Although we leave the administrative duties to Sister Elizabeth, we all volunteer at the Center with land work (mowing and gardening), kitchen work (cooking and clean-up), body work (massage and reiki) and housekeeping (laundry and facilities upkeep) and we’re grateful for many others who help us, especially Sister Paula’s sister Joan, who is a “Jill of all trades” and an invaluable asset to us all. My life has certainly provided more rich experiences than I could have imagined and I can’t wait to see what God has planned for “the rest of the story”! Sister Anne Tranelli Receives the 2011 St. John Neumann Award from Albany Diocese Sister Anne Tranelli, CSJ, (Sister Anne Eugene) has been awarded the 2011 Saint John Neumann Award from the Albany (NY) Roman Catholic Diocese. The honor was presented to Sister Anne by Bishop Howard J. Hubbard on November 20, 2011, during the 2011 Celebration of Catholic Schools Liturgy, held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany. The Neumann Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to Catholic school education. Sister Anne's award letter reads in part: "Through your service in so many ways, you have communicated to the broader community that Catholic schools are the best investment and hope for the future of the Church and society." The award gives public acknowledgement to service to Catholic schools, demonstrated through personal characteristics of zeal, support, enthusiasm, purpose and selfless generosity in the spirit of St. John Neumann. Sister Anne has served as a teacher and principal in Catholic schools for over 30 years and in Albany Diocesan Hispanic Services for over 20 years. Winter 2012 CSJ Newsline 9 Annual Report FISCAL YEAR 2010-2011 Mission Statement of the Sisters of St. Joseph Called by God and passionate for the mission of Jesus, the Sisters of St. Joseph come together to serve all persons. With a distinctive spirit of hospitality and a particular concern for the poor, we witness to the gospel message by being a unifying and reconciling presence to a world in need. Resource Development People want to have purpose in their lives, in what they do. They like to know that their work has value, that it serves a greater function than what can usually be seen in the day-to-day efforts, that it contributes a significant service to humanity. Persons who have given their lives to Christian service must be able to associate their tasks with ultimate values. The Sisters of St. Joseph have committed their lives to the mission of the Gospel. That commitment implies a commitment to good stewardship of all the resources necessary to carry out that mission in the present and to transmit it to future generations. The Sisters of St. Joseph cannot carry out their works of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy without contributions of resources and services of others. The sisters have a responsibility to share that mission with others by providing occasions for people to exercise their Christian stewardship. The needs of the Sisters of St. Joseph become opportunities for others to contribute their gifts, their resources, for the expression of that mission and the ministries that express it. We continue to invite you to participate with us in our mission. These graphs represent numbers of sisters, not percentages. (Continued on page 11) 10 CSJ Newsline Winter 2012 Annual Report FISCAL YEAR 2010-2011 FINANCES INCOME At 30.1%, our Sisters’ earnings from ministries provided our largest source of income this year; however, this source diminishes each year as our working sisters retire. Our second largest source of income is from monies received from the Sister M. Athanasia Gurry Trust. The Gurry Trust is a restricted fund to be used exclusively to meet the needs of our retired sisters. At this time the fund remains underfunded in light of our current and future retirement needs. This year with a few generous one-time bequests from benefactors of many years, our third largest source of income was Gifts/Donations at 13.6%. These gifts and donations continue to be an ever more important part of our support. Social Security income provides our fourth largest source of income at 11.5%. EXPENSES Our largest expense category is sisters’ living expense, which equals 40.5% of total expenses. Our second largest expense is Health Care at 34.5%. This expense includes the cost of professional health care, medication, health insurance premiums and salaries paid to our health care staff. Province Administration expenses at 16.1% includes the support of the Congregational Center, sisters’ continuing professional development, the vocation program for prospective members, support of Province offices, insurance and funerals. Plant operation expenses account for 7.2% and include maintenance and repair of the Provincial House and other Province property, as well as lay employees salaries and benefits for maintenance and housekeeping staff. Winter 2012 CSJ Newsline 11 Annual Report FISCAL YEAR 2010-2011 Opportunities for Giving St. Joseph’s Day Appeal Annual giving is the custom of making a yearly gift to an institution in which one has faith. It is a friendly, happy custom - a perennial reunion in spirit - a pooling of hope and blessing by those who wish the institution well. The focus of this 2012 appeal will be to help with the completion of renovations to the B wing at the Provincial House. Floors ground, one, two and three are all done thanks to your help. Pledge A pledge is a commitment to contribute a specific amount of money over a period of time. A pledge is a wonderful opportunity to make a larger commitment to the Sisters of St. Joseph than would be possible from current income. If you wish to give a monthly pledge using your credit card, please call us at (518) 783-3614. You can also donate via the web. Our website is www.csjalbany.org. Annuities Charitable gift annuities benefit both donor (with a guaranteed income) and recipient (with a philanthropic gift.) The Sisters of St. Joseph are able to offer this benefit to our friends and donors, aged 55 and above, through the National Catholic Community Foundation. With the charitable annuity the NCCF provides a lifetime of annuity payments to the donor (and survivor or other beneficiary) in exchange for an irrevocable gift of cash, securities or other assets. The donor purchasing the charitable gift annuity generally receives a higher rate of return than banks can offer and the payments are guaranteed for life. Upon the death of the donor, the remaining principal is added to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Fund at the NCCF. If you are interested in making a charitable gift to the Sisters of St. Joseph and providing income in your future, please call Sister Carol at 518783-3600. You can also check out the National Catholic Community Foundation web site at www.nccfcommunity.org. The path in the woods was His cross and way: Hills to scale high, as she did each day, Brought heaven to earth, and she climbed up high. There to “consider” His birds in the sky. Though mocked and taunted by her uncle’s tribe, Kateri never yielded to the sinful jibe. Today a new diamond in a brilliant crown Is presented our “Lily” from a Mohawk town. O holy Maiden – of us mindful be: Blessed Kateri, we pray to thee. Composed by Sister Celine Courtney, February, 1961 (formerly Sister Celine John) 32 CSJ Newsline Winter 2012 A Christmas Surprise! by Sister Mary Clare Lussier, CSJ It was one of those grey, damp mornings in November when the sky was filled with dark clouds waiting for a blast of cold air to squeeze out all the water they were holding. Most of us would have given a “thumbs down” to that. Nevertheless, a wild wind bent tree branches every which way and what leaves remained on them sailed to the ground. It was, indeed, a chilly and blustery day. When what to my listening ears did resound but a knock on my door! It was Tanya Semczuk, our Activities Coordinator, with a sheepish grin on her face. “I have a question for you.” She first told me of the decision of the Christmas Committee to celebrate the Provincial House Christmas parties as one; and second, what was missing from the planning was having a MRS. Santa Claus. Then came the big question: WOULD I BE SHE? Having a combined Christmas party seemed like a good idea to me. And, without my thinking twice about it, my being Mrs. Claus seemed like a good idea, too. I responded with a smiling “Yes”. Tanya relaxed, and the morning seemed a bit brighter, if only just inside. The first order of business seemed to be: what will I wear? Tanya said, “Let’s go to the Internet.” So off we went: Internet Window Shopping. Well, let me tell you there was a myriad of possibilities, including the ones that would fit a v-e-r-y thin Mrs. Claus and the ones looking like the cigarette girls used to wear in the old movies. We kept searching. And there it was! It was the proper size and exactly what we were looking for. Oh, but the price!! So, Tanya suggested calling some area Costume Companies. The results were not too heartening. One Company had a dandy outfit in stock, but the cost for a one-day rental was $200.00. This information drove us back to Internet shopping. After reconsidering our options, we made a decision and a Mrs. Santa Claus outfit was ordered online. Hurray! We were on our way. Susan Szczerbacki agreed to be my Make-Up Artist. Tanya would be my Dresser. Now all we had to do was to wait for a special package to arrive. My Make-Over Team was assembled and things were shaping up for my becoming Mrs. Claus. The day arrived. The box was delivered, and I tried on the dress. Whoops! It looked perfect coming out of the box, but when I tried it on, it needed an alteration. When told of this, Sister Suzanne Petronis, my valued seamstress came to my rescue and soon all was well. With the dress fitting just right, and my Make-Over Team in attendance, I was soon transformed into looking just like Mrs. Santa Claus. Entering the dining room in my beautiful new outfit and approaching our special chairs for the party, I definitely looked and entered into the part of Mrs. Santa Claus. Yet, something happened within me that I did not anticipate. I felt like a totally new person: neither myself, Sister Mary Clare, nor my costumed personality, Mrs. Santa Claus. Somehow, a peaceful presence enfolded me and I felt that I was more than myself or perhaps, more truly myself. The openness and trust the young people showered upon Mr. Claus and me, caused me to feel an inward shift toward my being more aware of who I really am: a Child of God. It was so plain to me: the reality of God’s delighting in each one of us, His special creations, and how (Continued on page 34) Winter 2012 CSJ Newsline 33 (Cont. from page 33) the imperfections of our lives are as nothing when God gazes at any one of us. Looking across the room, I was swept up by the thought of what wonderful individuals each of us is, and how both by ourselves and as a group, our very existence gives God glory and pleasure. We all have our stories, but the most wonderful one of all is that God chose us to be, and God rejoices in our very being. Yes, this was indeed a unique and wonderful Christmas Party, and we have the members of the Christmas Committee to thank for that. But more than a celebration for the Sisters and Staff and Families, we had a celebration for God. We gathered in a joyful spirit and indeed the Lord was among us and over us, saying Merry Christmas to all of us, as well. We were not shouting an ALLELUIA, but the joy and the blessings were there. Indeed, there we were, with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, giving glory to God with our laughing and munching and sharing and posing for pictures. I am so glad I was asked to be Mrs. Santa Claus. Without this opportunity, I may have missed the message of the Christmas Party: we are all special, beloved children of God. And, what a great Christmas gift that is: having this knowledge renewed in our hearts. Thank you for asking, members of the Christmas Committee. You gave me quite a gift! r Sister Lauren Van Dermark, CSJ, receives the Sister Catherine Bernard Cox Award from St. Mary's Healthcare by Sister Mary Rose Noonan, CSJ On January 30, 2012, Sister Lauren Van Dermark, CSJ, received The Sister Catherine Bernard Cox Award for Lifetime Service from St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam. Sister Lauren has a bachelor’s degree in social studies from The College of Saint Rose, a master’s degrees in history and a master’s degree in social work from The University at Albany (SUNY). She served the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses as a secondary social studies teacher and spent several years as director of senior services at Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties. From 1994 to 2004, Sister Lauren served on the Province Leadership Team of the Sisters of St. Joseph and then became the master plan coordinator for the Sisters of St. Joseph, overseeing the creation of the Carondelet Hospitality Center. She is currently a member of the executive team that is developing Shaker Pointe at Carondelet, Inc., a senior-living community. She has served for many years as a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s Healthcare and serves on the executive, audit and governance committees. Congratulations, Sister Lauren! 34 CSJ Newsline Winter 2012 The Excitement is Building! by Betsey Van Deusen, CSJ Now in the second full year, the St. Joseph Worker Program has grown from an idea to a vision to a dream and to a reality! The three women – Sarah Feeney, Claire Pooley and Brianna Singleton are engaged in placements that stretch them, serve our brothers and sisters and in so many ways, change the world! Sarah is serving at St. Paul’s Center in Rensselaer where she serves as the Transitional Housing Advocate. In this role she works with the women and their children who have been housed at St. Paul’s emergency shelter and have moved into independent living. She has become quite the advocate for the needs of these women and their children. Bri in the cart with collected leaves. Claire is serving at Joseph’s House in Troy and has been involved with their outreach efforts through their website, Facebook page and other social media. She has continued to have more client contacts and is always impressed when she meets a client on the streets of Troy and can call them by name. Brianna is serving at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam in the Behavioral Health Department facilitating groups, interacting with clients and learning a great deal about the issues surrounding persons with mental illness. Early in the New Year there will be a shift in the mode of service provision so lots of changes ahead for 2012. We are looking ahead to the 2012-13 program year and seeking placement sites for the new group of women who will be serving, learning, and growing as St. Joseph Workers. If you know of a possible placement, speak with them about the St. Joseph Worker Program or contact Sr. Betsy and she can have that conversation. One of the other issues going forward is what about an organization that would be a great experience for a woman but it cannot afford to pay the requested stipend of $12,000? We hope to establish a “scholarship fund” for placement sites so that if they can pay a portion of the stipend, perhaps our friends and benefactors can assist to make the partnership a reality. Please continue to pray for these women and consider who you might know – grand niece, granddaughter, neighbors, friend who would benefit from a year of service in community developing leadership and being stretched spiritually. Blessed 2o12!
