Its primary focus is to meet the needs of the Air Force through the development and performance of requirements‐driven, military‐unique, readiness‐focused clinical research and medical research readiness training. This acquisition will provide the 59 MDW, more specifically, the Department of Emergency Medicine, with animal clinical research protocol augmentation, including but not limited to, research protocol number FWH20110148A titled “Cobalamin‐ A small volume, blood sparing, neuroprotective drug for hemorrhagic resuscitation in swine (Sus Scrofa).” Such augmentation will also be required as protocols progress to the human studies phase. Augmentation functions shall also include technical and administrative services in support of intramural and extramural funded studies. Position Requirements: This position requires the equivalent of a Ph. D. or masters/graduate degree and 5 years of related experience at the Ph.D. or equivalent level. Possess current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). The research scientist is responsible for maintaining the certification in a current status throughout the task order’s period of performance. Duties: Primary Activities 1. Perform basic to advanced experimental efforts on large animal studies related to shock and resuscitation procedures in support of efforts by the Principal Investigator (PI). 2. Coordinate research efforts with statistician, veterinarian, and analytical laboratory staff members to meet the outcomes of the studies. 3. Identify appropriate forms and processes necessary to initiate, conduct and complete animal research protocols. 4. Complete necessary documents and reports of high quality for funding agency. 5. Draft and coordinate administrative, Institutional Review Board (IRB), and/or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval of proposed research protocols. 6. Prepare high quality presentation material, scientific abstracts, and manuscripts for publication consistent with guidance of the PI and related research efforts. Write multi‐year animal research protocols 9. Provide guidance for required quality control procedures being performed for every test done and of recording data in the designated logbook or worksheet. 10. Compare large animal hemorrhage data with de‐identified human hemorrhage data sets. 11. Provide support as protocols maturate to the human‐subject use level. Secondary Activities 1. Coordinate and track the purchase of equipment. 2. Lead and arrange local team research meetings. 3. Perform computer data entry of lab results and other lab information. 4. Facilitate the receiving of animal specimens and reporting results. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Experience and advanced knowledge of current large animal research technologies and practices Experience with clinical resuscitation methods such as hypotension, shock and cardiac arrest in animal models Prefer experience with toxicology and toxicological related research Advanced knowledge of standard laboratory equipment and safety procedures. Experience with writing animal research protocols Ability to prepare manuscripts, summary reports and presenting summary data to scientific audiences Skilled in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, and database software. Ability to plan and prioritize work. Ability to distinguish colors. Ability to correctly transcribe laboratory results. Ability to follow standard operating procedures. Ability to be a self‐starter and work independently.
