I trust you enjoyed a pleasant weekend - I know many of our boarders enjoyed time with family and a break from school routine. Life as a boarder is fun yet at times intensive as you are always with a group of friends who become a large family. Mrs Wright and Mrs Scrowston welcomed back all junior boarders on Sunday evening and it was great to hear all their news. This week started with a bright display of leggings outside school, as you were encouraged to vote for which pair Mrs Steel will run the York Marathon in this coming Sunday. Funds from our yellow accessorises raised £330.75 for St Leonard's Hospice. We wish Mrs Steel, and Major William, success in the marathon - if you are able to watch do look out for the bright leggings! Our first swimming gala was held on Monday against Ackworth School. Thank you to those parents who supported this event, which I understand was enjoyed by all taking part. There are various other sports fixtures this week - do look in the calendar for details. The venue of these fixtures can sometimes change, which we will share at the earliest possible opportunity through the text messaging system. Saturday is our Open Morning and we look forward to welcoming many new families into the school, as they consider their individual child's education. Should you know anyone who may be interested in visiting our school, do please make them aware of this event. I would also like to thank those of you whose children are helping in anyway during the morning - we do appreciate this fantastic support. At the end of next week Year 6 will be away at Bewerley Park. This is a super weekend to try out a number of exciting outdoor activities and to learn how to operate effectively as a team. Do please make sure your child has all they need for the weekend - may I encourage you to make them pack their own bag! @pockprep Fri 7th October EDITION 55 At the end of this week we say good bye, temporarily, to Mrs Cooke as she begins her maternity leave. Reception -This week we have been lucky to have lots of special visitors into our classroom - thank you to all our visitors so far and we look forward to seeing some more next week! The children have enjoyed hearing about what their peers get up to out of school and have asked some excellent questions. The classroom has taken on an Autumn theme and in Maths we have been focussing on creating simple repeating patterns - a big thank you to Florence for all the lovely conkers which have enhanced our activities. In French we learnt how to say hello and goodbye in several ways and also how to say 'yes' and 'no'. When Mrs Kennedy and Mr Wright covered the class, the children learnt about why we celebrate harvest and made some lovely, colourful harvest posters. We continue to learn Set 1 sounds in phonics and the children are having lots of practise at sounding out and blending - thank you for your support at home with their practise sheets and Reading. Have a lovely weekend, Mrs Afford & Mrs Holtby Rec SOTW - Jessica-Summer Wright for excellent work in phonics This week Year 1 have continued to enjoy lots of activities based around Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In the creative area the children have been making Goldilocks and the Three Bears puppets to retell the story. I wonder if they can retell the story at home? We have been writing lists of hard and soft objects as Goldilocks did not like mummy bears chair - it was too soft! In Maths we have continued to focus on time and money. The children have been brilliant at using money to buy and sell items in the classroom and recognising the different coins and their value. At the end of the week we used our drama skills to practice 'hot seating' as characters from Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have also been re visiting our 'Golden Rules' and the children have been making posters to explain these rules and what they mean. The children are now settled into their phonics lessons and we are so proud of their reading and writing - they are all such superstars! We look forward to our new story next week! Thank you for all of the trip reply slips! Have a lovely relaxing weekend - we wish Mrs Steel and Major William good luck for the Marathon on Sunday! Miss Carless and Mrs Steel 1X SOTW: Daniel Clark for his fantastic enthusiasm for learning this week! 1Y SOTW: William Wood for super behaviour and effort every day. Year 2 -This week we were so excited to have Mr Spedding come into school and talk about being a builder. He brought in some very special equipment the children were able to use and saw some of the materials and plans he uses to help him build houses. Thank you so much Mr Spedding! The children have been working on place value in 2, 3 and even 4 digit numbers. We also sorted shapes by their properties and learnt that a quadrilateral is any shape with 4 sides (clue- quad bikes have four wheels!) We began to use Venn diagrams to help sort 3D shapes by different criteria. The children also completed a graph showing land use in Pocklington and extracted information from the graph to answer questions. In literacy we made a story map for the story of Lego and how it was created as well as reading information texts about Lego. There is a you tube video if you would like to watch it at home. We also looked at the ‘a-e’ sound in words and wrote supersonic sentences remembering correct punctuation and use of ‘wow’ adjectives to make them really interesting and exciting to read. In Art we have looked at some abstract art, in particular Paul Klee and his cityscapes. His use of 2D shape and bright colours to represent buildings are what we are trying to recreate in our own paintings. This will continue into next week. http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/z8spyrd is a great link to a video about what bridges are made from. A fun 1 minute discussion for home! Thank you for your continued support, Mrs Walton. 2X SOTW is Adam for working really hard and concentrating on his work. Well done Adam! What we have done at school this week.. Year 3 have spent this week on a ‘cruise down the River Nile!’ The children have described what the scenery would be like and have researched the animals that they would see using ICT. They have learnt about the buildings along the river banks and thought about how they might feel whilst experiencing the journey. The children have then practised using persuasive vocabulary to create adverts, trying to entice people to go on a River Nile cruise. They then became excellent salesmen, performing their adverts to an audience to try to get people to buy tickets for their cruise. In Maths the children have been practising drawing regular and irregular 2D shapes with up to ten sides and are beginning to look at the symmetry of these types of shapes. The mental maths focus has been to add several numbers by using their knowledge of number bonds and to practise fast recall of the 3 times table. Thank you to those who have sent in books for the children to learn about Ancient Egypt with. We are very much looking forward to our trip to ‘The Dig’ on Monday and thank those parents who have offered to accompany us. We have got enough volunteers on this trip but please keep offering in the future as your help is always much appreciated! Please feel free to send in any Ancient Egyptian artefacts that you may have. We promise to look after them! Thank you for your on-going support. Have a great weekend! Mrs Rogers and Mrs Foster. Another busy week for Year 4. The children have been investigating different surfaces and seeing which has the most friction. They made ramps and chose six different surfaces in and around school to test. It was a very interesting experiment. We have also enjoyed exploring The Celts and learning about Queen Boudicca. We have worked on comprehension skills and are ensuring that the children use the text to find their answers. Next week we will start our diary writing project, learning the features of a diary and writing from the point of view of both a Celt and a Roman. In Maths we have investigated weight and made comparisons using kg and g. Fun fact: Mr Skip weighs 429g and Major William Wilberforce weighs only 129g. This week Year 5 have been delving into a new text as part of our 'hook on a book' - the Iron Man by Yorkshire born author Ted Hughes. We are looking forward to a taking part in a range of activities linked to the book including designing our own robots and writing fantastical tales. We are only at chapter 2 and are already absorbed in this brilliant book! Also this week year 5 say Bon voyage to Mrs Cooke as she leaves to have her second baby. We will miss her very much in school but wish her well and look forward to meeting her new arrival soon! Goodbye for now and good luck Mrs Cooke! Year 6 - The sunny autumnal weather, a full timetable plus lots of extracurricular activities has resulted in another week flying past. The cookery classes on Wednesday lunchtime has filled the classroom with lovely smells, but despite the temptation I am pleased to report that most of the deliciously looking chocolate and savoury dishes do appear to be making their way home. As Wednesday lunchtime also sees a very popular mixed hockey session, it seems that our Year 6 children are making good use of what is on offer to them. Only 7 days to our outward bound weekend so I trust you all got final details regarding our Bewerley Park trip, which we are all looking forward to. If you have any questions about this, or any other matter please do not hesitate to get in touch with me through the school office.
