Victim Court Support Program Overview

VICTIM COURT SUPPORT PROGRAM
Victim court support caseworkers receive referrals for court support from justice and
community organizations such as Crown counsel, other justice agencies, local victim
service programs as well as self referrals from victims. These programs are provided by
staff located at the courthouse.
They work closely with Crown counsel, justice personnel, and other victim service
providers to ensure coordinated information and support is provided to victims,
witnesses and their families.
The victim court support program complements services currently provided by the local
police-based and community-based victim service programs.
KEY SERVICES
Victim Court Support Caseworkers can provide:
• Ongoing support to victims/witnesses and their families through court updates,
emotional support, and information.
• Assistance with Victim Impact Statements, applications for Crime Victim
Assistance and registration with the Victim Safety Unit.
• General information about the criminal justice system.
• Court tours and accompaniment to court/Crown interviews.
• Referrals to victims/witnesses at the Courthouse to reconnect them with existing
victim service programs and other community resources.
No appointment is necessary and the services are free of charge.
Victim Court Support Programs provide information and support to victims of all types
of crime. Currently, Victim Court Support Programs operate from the courthouses
located in Port Coquitlam, Surrey, Vancouver’s Downtown Community Court, and
Vancouver Provincial Court. A victim court support caseworker also provides services to
the First Nations Court in New Westminster and North Vancouver.
