Glossary
Authority Nursery Classes (AN): operate 5 days a week and offer free
places for children aged 3 - 5 years. All nursery classes are managed
by the school’s Head Teacher who has responsibility for the provision of
pre-school education in line with the 3 - 5 curriculum.
Childminders: look after children in the childminder’s home. They work
full or part-time. Before employing a childminder, you should discuss
details of a contract:
•cost
•minimum and maximum hours and flexibility
•what’s included in the cost (food, nappies and outings)
•will you have to pay a holiday retainer?
•will there be particular exclusions (for instance school holidays)?
Creche (C): enables parents/carers to participate in an activity.
Parents/carers are required to pre-book a place and remain in the
same building.
Daycare (DC) and Private Nursery (PN): provide full or part-time day
care for children as young as 3 months (in Shetland). Parents pay a fee
for this service.
Mother/Parent & Toddler Groups (MT or PT): are community run groups
which vary in size, organisation and management. They are set up to
meet the needs of parents/carers with young children aged 0 - 3 years.
Parents/carers remain with the children throughout the session and
retain full responsibility for them. Parents/carers pay a fee.
Out of Nursery/School Care (OS): offers childcare after nursery or school
during term time and on school closure days. Full day care or part day
care is available during school holidays.
Partner Providers (PP): are pre-school groups that are in partnership with
the Education Service. They provide good quality pre-school
experience in line with the 3 - 5 curriculum.
Playgroups (P): are community run groups offering sessional care and
education for children aged 3 - 5 years. They provide a safe and
happy environment which stimulates and encourages the child’s
learning through play. Parents and carers may be involved in the
running of the group.
Under 5’s (U5): As Mother/Parent & Toddler but takes children 0 - 5 years.
Registration: All pre-school education and childcare providers,
with the exception of parent and toddler groups and under 5’s,
are registered with the Care Commission and inspected
annually. Inspection reports are public documents and are
available from the providers.

What to look for – Top Ten Questions
Choosing childcare and early education is a big step for you and
your child. You can find out about the childcare and early
education services in your area from your local Children’s
Information Service. Ask about opening hours, price, age of children
and if there is a space for your child.
There are lots of differences between types of childcare, early
education or pre-school services. Try and give yourself enough time
to visit several possible options in your area to get a good idea of
what could suit your child. Don’t forget you are the expert on your
child and should trust your feelings.
It can be a good idea to take your child with you to see how staff
talk to him or her. Try to go when children are there so you can see
if they are calm, happy and busy.
Here are some suggested questions to ask when you visit. Add your
own questions as well:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
How long have you been working with children?
Have you undertaken any training for your job? Any
Qualifications?
Do you enjoy being with children and why?
Can I look around the building to see the rooms and outside
play space? If there is no outside play space – how will you
make sure my child gets the chance to play outside?
Where will my child rest?
6.
What kind of food and drink will you give?
8.
How do you encourage good behaviour?
7.
9.
What will my child do all day?
Will my child be with a regular group of children?
How old are they?
How will the timetable fit in with my child?
10. How will you make sure I know how my child is getting on?
4
Top Ten Quality Pointers
When you visit possible childcare options, look for these Quality
Pointers. You could add your own as well.
1.
Are the children calm, safe and happy?
3.
Are the staff listening to children and answering them carefully?
2.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
Do children play and talk together?
Are the staff friendly and proud of their work?
Are the staff joining in with what the children are doing?
Are there lots of fun activities planned to help children learn
and play? Can children plan some of these themselves?
Are there plenty of clean toys and equipment for children
to use?
Are the premises clean, well-kept and safe for children to use?
Do parents have plenty of chances to say what they want for
their children?
10. If there are other things you want to know, do not be afraid to
ask. Good childcare staff expect you to ask questions and will
be happy to answer them.
Top Tips
Always take up references. You could ask for names of other
parents to talk to about your chosen service.
Listen to your child and find out more if he or she seems unhappy.
Always trust your own feelings about your childcare – you know
your child best.
