2a What is poverty? What is the experience of poverty like? Is it easy to escape it?
2b Describe life in a slum – in what conditions do people live? What kinds of jobs do people
do? What is their life like? What needs improvement (refer to the activity where you had to
choose the most important needs that the local government could provide)? You should
discuss the examples of the slums we examined in Mumbai and Rio.
2c Discuss sweatshops – we watched a documentary on sweatshops in Cambodia. What did
we learn? What are the working and living conditions of garment industry workers in
Cambodia? How might the situation improve?

3a Discuss the global AIDS epidemic. What is HIV and what is AIDS? How does it spread?
What are some of the recent global trends with respect to the disease (refer to the article
from class)? What can be done to prevent and stop the spread of this disease?
3b Discuss the recent outbreak of Zika in the Americas. What is Zika? How does it spread?
What are its symptoms? What is microcephaly? What can be done to stop the spread of
Zika?
3c How are HIV and Zika similar? How are they different?
1E_GS 4 Stereotypes
4a What are stereotypes? Where do they come from/how are they created?
4b In what way was Ozlem Gezer (the article we read) exposed to stereotypes? What does it
mean that she was “turkified”?
4c According to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (the Ted Talk we watched), what does it mean
to have a single story of someone and how can they be dangerous? What were some of the
single stories that she experienced herself or imposed on others?

5a What is migration and what are some of the reasons that people migrate? What is the
main difference between a migrant and a refugee?
5b What problems do migrants face abroad? In what ways might these challenges differ
depending on where the migrant comes from (e.g. a Slovak and a Turk both living in
Germany)? How would migrating to the US today be different than it was in 1910? In your
answer, refer to the Al Jazeera talk show with Jamal, Volker Turk, Mikael from Sweden. You
might also want to talk about the article written by Ozlem Gezer about Turkification.

Why do people have hobbies? Speak about advantages and disadvantages some hobbies
might have.

Speak about different activities we can do in and under water.
Give interesting facts about water (e.g. how much of the Earth's surface is covered in water,
daily consumption of water in developing versus developed countries etc.)
Give examples of how people can save water at home.

Discuss going out to eat versus staying home to eat – similarities and differences. How
would you behave in a restaurant? What kind of language would you use to communicate?
How would you talk with your family at home?
Give examples of other places in which you would use more formal language. How do you
politely ask for something?

Tell us a story about a difficult travel experience you or someone you know has had. What
happened? How did you/they feel in that situation? How did you/they solve the problem?
Give good detail, and be sure to use appropriate travel vocabulary from Coursebook.

narration modes do you know? Which narration mode was used in Animal Farm and Of Mice

1E_LW 3. Figurative language: Define oxymoron and give an example. Define metaphor
and metonymy. Which literary form contains the most examples of personification? What is
allegory? Which book you were supposed to read can be considered as an allegory and
why?
1E_LW 4. Of Mice and Men – Who wrote the book? Discuss the plot, characters and the
setting of the novel. Characterize Lennie and George, and pick two other characters and
discuss their relationship with George and Lennie.
1E_LW 5. Animal Farm – Who wrote the book? Summarize what happens in the story and
explain what historical event the story is meant to teach us about. Give 3 examples of
historical references; it can be characters or events in the story.
