Important Information
Three of the four Student Activities events in Hawaii take place at your respective school. You will need to
travel only for the Spelling Bee. After receiving your registration form, the School Confirmation and Coordinator
Letter will be e-mailed to the Overall School Coordinator. It will provide information on how to gain access to
the School Coordinator Handbooks and Spelling Word List.
Look at the attached descriptions which will give information on each event (objectives, guidelines, eligibility,
schedule, awards, fees).
Spelling BeeGrades 1-8
1. Two students per class may participate.
2. Students go to a central site to participate.
Creative Writing by Mail
Grades 4-12
1. Two entries per grade or a total of eighteen works may be submitted.
2. Papers are written at your school and mailed to the chairperson to be evaluated.
3. ACSI mails awards to the participating schools.
4. Selected Superior works are published in a booklet that is mailed to participating schools.
Math Olympics by Mail
Grades 3-8
1. Six students per grade may participate (three for computation and three for reasoning).
2. Tests are taken at your school and mailed to the chairperson to be corrected.
3. ACSI mails awards to the participating schools.
Math League by Mail
Grades 8-12
1. Unlimited number of students may participate per category.
2. Categories include: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Calculus
3. Tests are taken and corrected at your school. The results are mailed to the ACSI office.
4. ACSI mails awards to the participating schools.

For Early Bird registration rates to apply, registration and payment must be e-mailed, faxed, or postmarked by October 31, 2016.
Final deadline for school registration is Tuesday, November 15, 2016. All registration and payment must be faxed or postmarked by this date.

All schools participating in an event with the Association of Christian Schools International should ensure that they have adequate coverage for the
school, students, and sponsors/teachers. ACSI does not assume responsibility for any insurance. The school's student accident insurance should cover
most reasonable and customary medical expenses. Worker's Compensation coverage should cover employees/teachers. Activities include, but are not
limited to: art, leadership, math, music, speech, science fair, creative writing, and spelling events.

Spelling Bee | Grades 1–8
The ACSI Spelling Bee program in Hawaii occurs at three levels: School Spelling Bee, ACSI District Spelling
Bee, and ACSI National Spelling Bee. The rules and procedures for the ACSI National Spelling Bee are used in
all bees. Students who have won in their schools’ respective spelling bees are eligible to participate in the ACSI
District Spelling Bee.
District Spelling Bee: The District Bee has two parts: students spell against students in their respective
grade level only; then the finalists and runners-up from grades 5–8 spell against each other in the final Spell-Off.
The top speller at the Hawaii Spelling Bee will receive an invitation to the ACSI National Spelling Bee. They will
not attend the Regional Spelling Bee in Pasadena, CA.
Students must be enrolled in grades one through eight (1–8). Each school may send one student per grade level
or one student per classroom if the school has multiple classes per grade. School level spelling bees must be
completed by Thanksgiving. Student participation forms and fees must be sent by the to the event Chairperson.
All participants receive a certificate of participation; the top four per grade level receive rosettes. In addition, the
top four spellers in grades 5–8 also receive trophies.
National Spelling Bee: The National Spelling Bee will take place on May 5-6, 2017 in Washington DC.
The top five (5) students in the CA Regional Spelling Bee and the top (one) speller from Hawaii are eligible to
participate.

National Spelling Bee Student Participation Fee: Information will be given to the qualifier at the District
Spelling Bee.

Mail-In Creative Writing Festival | Grades 4–12
The ACSI Creative Writing Festival provides the opportunity for young authors to have their work evaluated by
judges. Works that receive a Superior rating will be re-evaluated at a regional level, and select works will be
included in a regional publication. All work is submitted by mail, students do not travel. A school may register a
maximum of four (4) students per grade level.

Three judges will evaluate each work. An average of the three scores will determine the student’s merit rating. All
students will receive a certificate of participation and a ribbon indicating Superior, Excellent, or Good. Students
will also receive copies of the judges’ evaluations.
All works must be word-processed. Students will be required to submit one (1) digital copy (Microsoft Word format
only) and three (3) hard copies of their work by the date of the event. Teachers must verify that the student’s
work has not been plagiarized and meets the word count requirement. Students should save an electronic copy
of their work until judging is completed.

Deadlines
All work must be submitted to the Event Chairperson by the date of event as noted below. Submissions not
organized per instructions in the Coordinator’s Handbook will be returned un-evaluated. Entries postmarked
after the deadline will be returned un-evaluated.

Mail-In Math Olympics | Grades 3–8
The ACSI Math Olympics challenges students in two categories: Arithmetic Computation and Mathematical
Reasoning. Students in grades three through eight (3–8), compete with students in their own grade level. Each
school may enter no more than 3 students in the computation category and 3 students in the reasoning category
per grade level. The maximum number of students from any school is 36.
All students receive a certificate of participation. Rosettes are awarded to the top five places in each grade
level category. The top student in each category, with a score of 85% or higher, is awarded an Olympics-style
medallion.

Mail-in Math League | Grades 8–12
The ACSI Math League is an activity that takes place on your campus. There are six sections of competition: PreAlgebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. Within each section there will be a series
of 4 tests. Each test consists of 5 questions.
You may allow as many students as you want to take the test. Only the top 5 scores will be reported. Students
must be enrolled in the subject area in which they are participating. Students may participate in only one category.
Tests will be given between March 1 and April 15. You have the choice of when to give the tests during that time
period.
A certificate of participation will be given to all students who take the tests. Ribbons will be given for the highest
individual cumulative score per section in each school. Medals will be given for the highest individual cumulative
score per section. A plaque will be given to the highest school cumulative score per section. The tops scores for
each category will be entered into the national competition.
