physicalworld.Inexaminingthedifferentwaysinwhichthetwomediumsreflectplaceandpositionality,
studentsshouldconsidertheutilityandrelativevalueofdifferentgeographicrepresentations.Through
interactionwiththeformativeperformancetasksandfeaturedsources,studentsbuildtheirknowledgeand
understandingsothattheyareabletodevelopanargumentthatanswersthecompellingquestion“DoWe
StillNeedPaperMaps?”
ThisinquirypartiallyembedstheTakingInformedActionsequence.Theunderstandelementisdeveloped
throughSupportingQuestions1,2,and3.Intheassesselement,studentsdeterminewhichofthemediums
wouldbestbeusedtohelpvisitorsfindtheirclassroom.Theactpiece,thecreationofaschoolmapof
chosenmedium,canbedoneinadditionto,orasasubstitutefor,theSummativePerformanceTask.
Itisimportanttonotethatthisinquirywillrequireprerequisiteknowledgerelatingtomapping.Thus,teachers
shouldhavealreadyintroducedtheirstudentstomapsastoolsrepresentinglocationsandasourceofinformation
forestablishingplace.
NOTE:Thisinquiryisexpectedtotakethreetofive30-minuteclassperiods.Theinquirytimeframecouldexpand
