Teacher Instructions for Animal Farm Vocabulary Word Search (Chapters Six and Seven) Purpose The purpose of this activity is to engage the students in the vocabulary of Animal Farm chapters six and seven. To fully understand and appreciate the text, the students must understand and appreciate the meaning of words. And more importantly, this activity is one of many that will seek to build the vocabulary of the students. Directions The process is simple enough. Hand out the word search activity, and discuss the directions together as a class (since the students know what a word search is, it is not necessary to discuss Part One in any detail!), especially Part Two and emphasize the “why” of this portion of the assignment. To twist a quote from Sir Francis Bacon is fitting, “The study of words make men (and of course women) wise.” To build a vocabulary is to build their characters. Teach and emphasize this! It is more than just copying definitions out of a dictionary; it is imprinting the meaning in the intellect and giving the students opportunity to use these words that will help in their learning. Assessment Having completed the assignment is an obvious means of assessment, but the true measure of assessment will be when the students do indeed internalize the meanings of these words and are able to use them appropriately. © Decker, 2004 2 Animal Farm Vocabulary Word Search (Chapters Six and Seven) Solution + + + + + + + + F + + + M + + + + + P + + + + + + + + + + + + + L + + + + A + + + + + E + + + + + + + + + + + + A + + + + + L + + + + + R + + + + + + + + + + + G + + + + + + I + + + + + P + + + + + + + + + + S E + + + + + + G + + + + + E + + + + + + C + + T + S + + + + + + N + + + + + N + + + + + + + A A + + O + + + + D + I + + + + + D + + + + + + (Over,Down,Direction) ARABLE(22,12,SW) CAPITULATED(17,1,SW) CATEGORICALLY(6,1,SE) CHAFF(14,7,NW) COCCIDIOSIS(22,8,W) COUNTENANCE(18,19,NW) FLAGSTAFF(1,9,NE) INFANTICIDE(22,1,S) LABORIOUS(23,11,N) MALIGNITY(1,13,E) MANGELS(25,1,S) PERPENDICULARITY(1,19,E) REPOSE(10,6,W) STUPEFIED(10,12,SE) © Decker, 2004 + F T + + P + + E E + + T + + + + + I + + + + + + F + + E + E + + T C + + Y + + + + + C + + + + + + + + F + G R + A + + N S + + + + + + U + + + + + + + + + F + O L + + + + A T + + + + + L + + + + + + + + + + A U R S + + + + N U + + + + A + + + + + + + + + + T H + I + + + + + E P + + + R + + + + + + + + + I + + C S C + + + + + T E + + I + + + + + + + + P + + + + O + A + + + + + N F + T + + + + + + + A + + + + + I + + L + + + + + U I Y + + + + + + C + + + + + + D + + + L + + + + E O E + + + + + + + + + + + + + I + + + + Y + + L + + C D + + + + + + + + + + + + C + + + + + + B + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + C + + + + + A + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + O + + + + R + + + + + + + + + + + + I N F A N T I C I D E A + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + S U O I R O B A L + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + M A N G E L S + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + 3 Animal Farm Vocabulary Word Search (Chapters Six and Seven) Part One Directions: Simply find and highlight all fourteen words listed below the word search.
