Thomas Paine summary Due Tues. 10/25/16
You really ARE the expert on this assignment, since only your group was required to do this
reading, so be thorough in your answers!
Your assignment: Write a one page summary (paragraph form) of Thomas Paine’s life to share
with your group based on pages 110-111 of your AL text. This is a mini-paper, not a point-bypoint question and answer.







You should include, but are not limited to, the following points:
p. 110, first para: What was he known for and responsible for initially? What work
contributed to his downfall and why?
In 1776, he wrote “Common Sense”. What effect did it have on the colonists and what
points did it make?
Under what circumstances did he write “The American Crisis” papers and what was their
effect?
What were the attractions of Paine’s writing style?
From the last paragraph on p. 111: Explain what made his works “propaganda”. Look
up the word propaganda so that you understand it and know how to explain it. How was
his writing false?
Anything else that you believe is worth mentioning.
When you are in your expert groups, if any one in your group covered points that you didn’t,
write them in so that you can talk about them when you go to Discussion Groups.
I’m not giving you a word number requirement, but be thorough.
Use another sheet of paper to complete this assignment and attach it to this one.
EVERYONE ANSWER: Read and annotate pages 132-135 on Phillis Wheatley. Be prepared to
discuss the discussion questions on page 135. You do not have to write anything for Wheatley. I
will check for annotations, and this WILL NOT be for extra credit. This is a required part of
your assignment.
