Quick Summary:
Mashaa Allah, you all did very well today!
We completed the second property of the ism which is Number.
There are three categories in Number: Singular, Pair and Plural.
We covered Singular and Pair by learning the Muslim chart.
Under Plural we learned about:
- Sound Masculine Plural (words ending in the oona and eena ending combinations from the
Muslim chart)
- Sound Feminine Plural (words ending in the aatun and aatin ending combinations from the
Muslim chart)
- Broken Plurals: Words that do not follow the Sound Plural endings.
In English for example the expected plural ending is 's'.
Book -> Books,
Cat-> Cats,
Kid-> Kids.
Some words do not follow the expected ending for example:
Tooth->Teeth, Child-> Children, Sheep -> Sheep etc.
In Arabic words that are plural, but do not end in the expected plural endings (oona, eena,
aatun, aatin), are also broken plurals.
Broken plurals can be either human or non-human.
The chart on page 19 helps us understand how to grammatically treat different kinds of plurals.
This chart is your friend :) Use it while completing the homework.
- Ism Jam'a: These words (‫ )قوم ناس قرن‬are treated as masculine and plural even though they
are translated as singular.
