The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary or ‘Parthenos Maria’, where you will be blessed with highly spiritual aura as you will see the icon of the Mother of God Kykkotissa. The icon remains hidden under a protective covering, and is rarely uncovered (optional visit to Kykkos Museum). In short distance we will visit ‘Throni’ the tomb of Archibishop Makarios, the first president of the Republic of Cyprus. Then you continue to Larnaca and visit the magnificent 9th century Church of Saint Lazarus, one of the finest examples of Byzantine Architecture in Cyprus. Next you visit Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. Free time for shopping and coffee right in the center of Nicosia known as Ledras street. After you visit Asinou church, located on the east bank of a stream, 3km from the mountainous village of Nikitari, Panagia Asinou Church is a small church dedicated to the Virgin of ‘Phorbia’. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and contains some of the finest Byzantine wall paintings on the island, dating from the 12th to the 17th century. Free time for optional lunch at restaurant nearby. Last but not least you visit Omodhos Village, famous for its wine and narrow cobbled streets. The village is built around the Monastery of the Holy Cross which, according to records, dates back to the arrival of Saint Helena in Cyprus (A.D.337). The Monastery is home to a piece of the Holy Rope with which Christ’s hands were tied to the Cross. You will visit Ayios Ilarionas and Bellapais Abbey, an attractive monastery dating from the early of 13th Century, near Kyrenia in northern Cyprus. It is the main attraction of the picturesque village of Bellapais, which is also known for being the home of Lawrence Durrell (from 1953 to 1955), author of Bitter Lemons. Enjoy the spectacular views down to Kyrenia on the cost and across the northern plains. Enjoy your free time to walk in the harbor town of Kyrenia and for lunch (not included).
