THE ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT BANK (IDB)
The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is a multilateral development
financial institution established in 1395H(1975G) to foster economic
development and social progress in its member countries and Muslim
communities in non-member countries in accordance with the principles
of Shari’ah (Islamic Law). The present membership of the IDB stands at
57 countries spreading into different continents and regions.
The mission of the IDB is to promote comprehensive human
development, with a focus on the priority areas of alleviating poverty,
improving health, promoting education, improving governance and
prospering the people.
The IDB provides various forms of development assistance for
poverty alleviation through human development, fostering economic
cooperation by promoting trade and investment among member
countries, and enhancing the role of Islamic finance in the social and
economic development of its member countries.

The Islamic Development
Bank established the IDB Prize
for Women’s Contribution to
Development in 1427H(2006G)
in alignment with the
recommendations of the IDB
Women’s Advisory Panel.
The Panel is composed of 12
prominent women recognized
as leaders in their fields who
advise the Bank on how to
enhance women’s participation
in the socio-economic
development process. The
Prize is awarded annually in
order to draw international
attention to the vital role
women play in developing their
communities and the world.

OBJECTIVES
Inspire
The Prize aims to RECOGNIZE, ENCOURAGE, INSPIRE and
REWARD women’s participation in the socio-economic
development process. It aims to:
• women by promoting exemplary role models
Recognize
Reward
• the important role of women in IDB member countries
and Muslim communities globally
• individuals and organizations that are committed to
improving the well being and status of women locally,
nationally, and globally
• contributions made by individuals or organizations to
improve the socio-economic status of women in IDB
member countries and Muslim communities in nonmember countries
• individuals and organizations to initiate and actively
engage in projects aimed at developing women and
building their capacities
• actions that reinforce and strengthen the role of women
as essential contributors to society as well as effective
agents of change and development

• efforts to improve women’s access to opportunities and
resources to help them become active participants in
developing their economy and society
The Prize consists of two cash awards:
• individuals and organizations that offer grants and
resources to work towards promoting women’s
leadership, engagement and contribution to the socioeconomic development process
b) U.S. $ 100,000 for an organization
a) U.S. $ 50,000 for a woman or a group of women
The Prize is awarded during the Annual Meeting of the IDB
Board of Governors.

CRITERIA
The general criteria applied in selecting and assessing
nominations for the Prize for both individuals and
organizations include the following:
Impact
a. The IDB in consultation with the IDB Women’s Advisory
Panel determine the yearly theme for the Prize.
Individuals and organizations nominated should exhibit
projects that have contributed to the improvement of the
socio-economic status and well being of society.
b. The IDB refines the theme and topics, establishes
the specific criteria of selection and develops the
nomination forms.
Creativity
c. The IDB publicizes the Prize and receives nominations.
Individuals and organizations nominated should have
projects/activities that are outstanding, innovative and
unique.
d. An independent screening committee is established by
the academic advisor to short list nominations.
Outreach
Individuals and organizations nominated should have
mechanisms for expanding their projects/activities to
surrounding areas to ensure their services are offered to as
many beneficiaries as possible.
e. An independent Selection Committee is established
by the IDB to select winners of the Prize from the short
listed candidates.
f. The winners are announced during the Annual Meeting
of the IDB Board of Governors.
Sustainability
SELECTION COMMITTEE
Individuals and organizations nominated should have
projects/activities that are sustainable.
The Selection Committee is composed of five distinguished
women. Members are annually chosen and selected
based on their extensive experience in the field of the
related theme and topics. The committee is comprised
of members from the IDB Women’s Advisory Panel and
subject specialists.
PRIZE PROCESS
The Prize is administered by the IDB through the Capacity
Development Department in consultation with the IDB

Women’s Advisory Panel and in collaboration with its
academic advisor, Effat University. The processing of the
Prize involves the following steps:

WOMEN’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL
OF CANCER
Cancer is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Annually there are a reported 14 million new cancer
cases and 8.2 million cancer related deaths. Unfortunately, these numbers are expected to rise by about 70% over the next two
decades. The overwhelming majority of new cancer cases and cancer deaths are in Africa, Asia, Central and South-America
regions in which most IDB member countries are located. Many of these countries require various support and assistance to
ensure the availability of comprehensive and affordable cancer services required to meet the increasing demand.
Cancer is a major global health problem that is increasingly impacting the world. It causes emotional stress and financial
strain, which have a negative impact on society in general, disrupting the life of millions. Thus, reducing the incidence and
mortality associated with cancer must remain one of society’s major health goals. In recognizing the vital and much needed
role of women in cancer prevention and control, the IDB is devoting the 12th Edition of IDB Prize for Women’s Contribution to
Development to highlight and reward their role and contributions in the fight against cancer.
INDIVIDUALS:
RECOGNIZING WOMEN’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF CANCER
The Prize will award outstanding achievements made by women who advocate for the implementation of effective cancer
prevention strategies and provide support to comprehensive cancer control measures by undertaking various activities
such as advocacy, raising awareness, cancer screening, treatment and palliative care.

To be eligible for the Prize, women must meet the following requirements:

ORGANIZATIONS:
RECOGNIZING WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP IN THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF CANCER
The Prize will award outstanding achievements made by women led organizations in implementing effective cancer
prevention activities and control strategies. Their activities include advocating for policy changes, initiating campaigns
to raise awareness on prevention and early detection, implementing programs which significantly improved access and
quality to treatment services and palliative care.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
To be eligible for the Prize, organizations must meet the following requirements:

Be legally registered in one of the IDB member countries.
The activities are conducted in the IDB member countries or for Muslim communities in non-member countries.
Be a not-for-profit organization.
Be a women led/or have women partcipating in the decision-making level of the organization.
Have values and principles and run operations that do not conflict with those of the IDB.
Support projects/activities that have clearly helped to improve awareness, prevention and treatment of cancer and
supportive care to cancer patients.
• Be nominated by an independent organization.

In addition to the completed nomination form, the following supporting materials are required:
• Letter from nominating organization.
• Two letters of reference (each letter of reference must provide the name, address, position, telephone number and email
address of the referee) who can confirm the accuracy of the information submitted on the nomination form and attest to
the dedication and commitment of the individual nominated.
• Documents attesting to the achievements of the nominated individual (certificates of acknowledgment, photographs,
videos, news articles, brochures, leaflets, personal stories from women benefitting from the work of the individual, reports from others on the achievements of the individual, etc.)

• Conduct workshops, conferences, and trainings on cancer prevention and control .
• Offer information as well as national and community-level education programs to the general public and health
professionals about preventing and controlling cancer.
• Support cancer research.
• Implement awareness campaigns on the proper prevention and control of cancer.

• Implement programs/initiatives that improve and increase early detection and screening of cancers.
• Organize programs for population at risk especially for women in the developing world.
• Facilitate/provide women and other at risk group’s access to early detection and treatment programs.
(3) Improve Patient Outcomes:
• Provide support to patient in having access to quality cancer care and treatment.
• Help to alleviate the financial burden of cancer.
(4) Palliation:
Organizations specialized in providing relief from the symptoms of cancer and stress in order to improve quality of life for
both the patient and family to gain the strength and carry on with daily life.

6. Beneficiaries
Provide details on the beneficiaries of the organizations activities. Include the number of persons who benefitted directly
and indirectly.
7. Financial Assistance
Detail the financial resources of the organization devoted for the activities related to the Prize topic. Provide the annual
budget of the organization for past three years.
8. Impact
Provide detailed information on how the organization’s activities have contributed to great change and improvement in cancer
awareness and control including policies, numbers of people reached, resources mobilized, screening conducted etc.
9. Creativity
Provide details on what makes the organization exceptional or unique. What is outstanding or innovative about the
organizations activities related to the topic of the Prize.

10. Outreach
Describe how the organizations activities related to the topic of the Prize provide services to a particular segment of a
community and how these services are extended to the larger community and beyond. 11. Sustainability
Detail how the organization is able to continue its activities, financially and operationally. Provide details on how the
organization’s activities will help to support future generations. Describe any changes and benefits within the community
which were a result of the organization’s activities.
12. Application of Award
Detail how the award will be used to further the activities of the organization related to the topic of the Prize.
13. Supporting Materials
List all of the supporting materials, documents, photos, videos and submitted along with the application. If you would like to
submit any supporting documents electronically, you may list them here.

14. REQUIRED SUPPORTING MATERIALS
In addition to the completed nomination form, the following supporting materials are required:
• Official letter from nominating organization.
• Legal registration documents.
• Two letters of reference (each letter of reference must provide the name, address, position, telephone number and email
address of the referee) who can confirm the accuracy of the information submitted on the nomination form and attest to
the dedication and commitment of the organization nominated.
• Most recent annual report.
• Documents attesting to the implementation and achievements of the projects related to the topic (e.g. certificates of
acknowledgment, photographs, videos, news articles, brochures, leaflets, personal testimonies from women benefitting
from the activities of the organization, reports from others on the achievements of the activities, examples of projects/
activities supported, etc.)
15. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
