Bacteria and Fungi Mini Lesson Plan
This is a mini lesson plan for the study of bacteria and
fungi for grades 1-5. This study introduces the student
to Louis Pasteur, a famous microbiologist, who is
responsible for the “pasteur”ization process. This is only
a suggested lesson plan. You should feel free to modify
it to fit your student’s needs and grade level. Please read
through the entire lesson plans before starting as there
is some preparation involved with experiments and you
need to plan ahead.
Setting up your notebook:
Have your student start a notebook. Use a three ring
binder or a three-prong folder. This is a mini study, so a
three-prong folder will be able to hold all of your work.
Our family always uses page protectors and we suggest
them to keep all your students work free from damage.
Insert cover page in a page protector and add to your
notebook. As your student completes work, simply add it
to the notebook.

Items you will need to get for this study:
• “Pastures Fight Against Microbes” by Beverly Birch
and Christian Birmingham (this is the only core book
used with this study)
• (Optional) “Bacteria and Fungi” science kit from the
young scientists club. The purchase of this kit is
optional. I have provided internet links for science
experiments that can be done in place of the young
scientist club kits.
Experiments:
Included in this package are Internet links for science
experiments you will do in this study. All instructions are
given, but you will need to purchase materials for these
experiments so please read through them and plan ahead.
If you don’t like having to find materials then you may
want to consider buying the science kit listed above
because it will come with everything you will need.
For days 5-8 I have given you more than one experiment
to choose from, you may choose which one you want to do,
or do both if you like.
Once you start some of these experiments you will have
to observe them for many days to watch the bacteria

grow. So you may have a few experiments going on at the
same time because of this.
These experiments are really neat and your children will
enjoy seeing what they just learned about actually come
to life! I encourage you to do one experiment every day
for days 5-8.
Narration:
Narration is when you simply have your student tell back
what you have just read to them or what they have read
to themselves. This is a great way to see if your student
was paying attention and to make sure they understand
what is being read. Having them do this often will build
this important skill.
Copywork:
Enclosed are copywork texts and writing sheets. These
paragraphs can be used to have your student do copywork
from. These can be copied in print or in cursive. You can
have them copy the entire paragraph at once, or you can
split it up into two or three lessons. For very young
students you may just want them to copy one sentence
and be done with it, the decision is yours.
