REFLECTION
Jesus calls people to encounter God’s Kingdom. The
phrase “the empire/kingdom of the heavens” is not
commonoutsidetheGospels.TheideaofGodasking
who asserts sovereign rule among God’s people and
thenations,however,iscommonintheHebrewBible.
The Greek word basileia (“empire/kingdom/reign”),
though, is both imitative and contested since the
word regularly refers to empires like Rome’s that
assertruleoverpeopleandland.TheGospel’suseof
the same term illustrates a common practice among
colonizedpeoples.Theyoftennegotiateimperializing
power by using native traditions to rede5ine its
language to produce a similar yet different meaning.
TheGospelimitatesimperiallanguageandstructures
(God’s dominating power) yet rede5ines them as the
subsequent scene of Jesus’ healing and liberating
powerdisplays.
Jesus’ then calls two sets of brothers to be his
followers. They are 5ishermen, embedded in the
imperial economy. Rome asserted control over the
landandsea,theirproduction,andthetransportation
and marketing of their yields with contracts and
taxes.Jesusdisruptsthesemen’slives,callsthemtoa
different loyalty and way of life, creates a new
community, and gives them a new mission (5ish for

people).Their call and accepting responseanticipate
