Summer 2016 Course Catalog
Hartford Union High School is offering specific summer school courses for credit and for readiness.
Please check below the course descriptions and specific times for each course offered.
Registration Guidelines
Registration for Hartford Union High School’s summer school credit offerings will be held February 10 – February 14,
2016. Registration will take place online through Skyward Student Access. Directions on how to register online are
enclosed. Registration will close at 8:00 PM Sunday, February 14. Please note various start and end times for each
class. Grading and attendance expectations will be distributed by each teacher via message center. Students may
register for only one Work Ahead course. Due to the popularity of our summer school Work Ahead courses and limited
access to facilities, summer school course requests that exceed maximum capacity will follow a lottery process. If
necessary, the lottery will be held on Monday, February 15. You will receive an email confirming your registration and
lottery results the week of February 15.

Foundations of PE Grade 9

This class is a required PE credit for graduation.

A sound mind and body are essential to living life to the fullest. The objectives of physical education are skill
development, physical fitness, and an understanding of the need for exercise and how it affects the body. All freshmen
are required to take swimming, dance, weight training, and fitness units. The remaining units will be fitness-based
activities.

This pathway is designed to expose students to a variety of individual and dual activities. This course will emphasize
health & skill-related components of fitness through a variety of individual and dual activities including: tennis,
badminton, pickleball, outdoor pursuits (kayaking & canoeing), fly casting, golf, and spinning.

Work Ahead Biology for PLTW
Grade 9

This course is only intended for incoming Freshmen that will be taking the PLTW: Principles of Biomedical Sciences
course during the 2016-17 school year. Taking this summer school course will free up a full credit during the 2016-17
school year. For example, a student that receives credit for this 0.5 Biology course and takes the PLTW: Principles of
Biomedical Sciences course during the 2016-17 school year, will not have to take Biology during the 2016-17 school
year. This summer school Work Ahead course meets all the state of Wisconsin required Biology Standards that are not
covered in the PLTW: Principles of Biomedical Sciences course curriculum. Course content will include Evolution,
Reproduction/Development, and Ecology. If your student is a part of the Freshmen Cohort, this option is not available in
summer school as Biology credit will be included in the Cohort model.

Focus on Careers – Online Grade 11

Required student meeting May 24 @ 2:05pm Drama Lecture
HUHS Juniors will focus on career exploration and development while introducing personal finance concepts. Students
will have the opportunity to examine post-secondary options and resources available for success. Students will also
focus on employability skills, job campaign credentials, interviewing techniques, and a job shadow. The Financial Literacy
Graduation Requirement is met through mastering course learning targets. The Focus on Connections event associated
with this course allows students to apply the concepts learned and life choices made in a simulated environment. In
order to successfully pass, Focus on Careers students will need to meet several learning targets during the school year. This
will be communicated to all summer school students and parents during the class.

Literature - Online Grades 11-12
Six weeks: Wednesday, June 8 – Friday, July 15
0.5 credit
Literature is a course that will examine a variety of literary forms including poetry, drama, and prose. Active reading
strategies, literary analysis, process writing, discussion, and critical thinking skills will be utilized to establish and
evaluate abstract thinking. Through reading literature, students come to a greater appreciation of varying perspectives
while simultaneously gaining a better understanding of themselves. This is a six week online course. Details will be
provided by the course instructor in May.

Getting Ready for Level 2 Math Classes: Algebra II, Honors

This class is designed for 9th grade students who will be taking Honors Algebra II, Algebra II, or Integrated II at HUHS in
the fall. Students will strengthen their Algebra skills by solving equations and inequalities, simplifying expressions with
exponents and radicals, and exploring linear and quadratic functions. Problem solving strategies and applications to the
"real world" will be emphasized. Students will sign up after course selection occurs in the spring.
