Parent Volunteers Needed to Instructional Materials Review
Katy ISD is looking for parent volunteers to serve on committees to review and select new instructional
materials for Career and Technical Education, Languages Other Than English, several new courses and other
courses needing updated materials. These materials will be implemented during the 2017- 2018 school year. If
you would like to be a part of a review committee, complete the online form at http://tinyurl.com/Parent-2017Proclamation to be considered for participation on the selection committee. Keep in mind that not all
volunteers may be selected to serve on a committee.
Canvas Parent Observer
What is Canvas?
Canvas is a learning management system (LMS) that allows teachers to provide instructional support, class
calendars, assignments and resources for students in a safe online environment. For traditional face to face
classes, Canvas is an integral part of sharing blended classroom instruction. All Canvas courses are developed
by Katy ISD and are aligned to the Katy ISD Curriculum including the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
(TEKS).
What is an Observer role in Canvas?
Observers have limited permissions that allow them to see what is going on in a course and a calendar of
assignments. Like students, Observers cannot view a course until it is published and the course has started.
For assistance with Assignments, Test Dates, Quizzes, or other Canvas course content, please contact your
child’s teacher.
What can Parents view in Canvas?
Below are the features available to Parents. Please note that not all courses use all features.
 Set your Notifications
 View the Dashboard
 View the course Syllabus
 View prompts but not participate in Discussions
 View but not submit Assignments
 Preview and download some Files
 View the Modules Page
 View Canvas Grades
 View the Calendar
 Communicate with the teacher
How will Parents access Canvas?
 The link to the Canvas login is located at http://katyisd.instructure.com. Please remember to
bookmark the Canvas login website for future quick and easy access.
 Your username and password are the same as your Home Access Center (HAC) account. For
information on the HAC, visit tinyurl.com/KatyHAC
 If you are experiencing trouble with your HAC login or password, please contact your home campus or
the Technology Support Center at (281)237-4357.
 Parents should not use their student's login credentials.
 There is an app in Google Play and the App Store for tablets and smartphones. Windows devices use
the browser.

Huge shout out to our 8C Volleyball Team! Last week they battled the Bulldogs at Beck JH and lost in 3
sets. Set 1: Bulldogs 25-15, Set 2: Mavericks 25-22, Set 3: Bulldogs 25-23. Keep up the great work girls…I’m so
proud to be your coach!! GO MAVS!

Attention Dads! Come learn how to get involved with your child and MRJH! Join us for our annual Dads &
Pizza Night on Thursday, October 13 from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Cafeteria to learn more. Flyer is attached.
Attendance Reminders
Parents, while we understand that there are important reasons for checking out your child, we will always
encourage students to stay in the class for valuable instruction. We ask that if you would like your child ready
to be checked out, we can do that, but we will not pull them from their classroom until you are at the
Attendance Office to physically sign them out. We have found that the students are just sitting and missing
valuable instruction when just sitting in the front office.
Don’t forget that if your child is sick, please let us know. You can call us, send a note with your child the next
day or you can visit the MRJH website and record your child’s attendance for that day. All district policy
attendance standards still apply when using this form.

WELCOME MAVERICKS TO THE 2016 - 2017 SCHOOL YEAR!!
The MRJH PTSA needs YOU!!  What IS the PTSA? PTSA stands for: Parent, Teacher, Student Association.
That’s right – Students can be a part of this organization as well. Membership is only $8 for the year, and will
allow for certain perks during the school year….for instance early admission to FUN FOOD FRENZY!
If you would like to serve on the board and represent your CLASS and have input on things like Art, and 8th
Grade Dance, then see the attached application to apply. Deadline to apply is October 5th. Forms can be
turned into the front office. We look forward to having you as students work with us this year.
