Ideas for Parents - Class 4
Communication and Language
 Find pictures of jungle animals. Write names on card or buy a
matching pair game.
 Watch the DVD of The Jungle Book and The Lion King. Talk
about where the animals live and what their homes are like.
 Talk about how animals move e.g. lions run, elephants stamp.
Physical Development
 Play a game pretending to be an animal and the adult has to
guess what is being mimed.
 Move around outside or at least in a large space pretending you
are an animal.
 Use small tools like scissors, pencils, crayons boxes and paper
fabric to make an animal home for your toy animals.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
 Select a toy animal and pretend that it is going on an adventure.
Consider what it will eat and where it will sleep. Will there be
any dangers?
 Talk about caring for animals. If they have a pet, discuss how it
is looked after?
 Discuss the differences between the animals’ bedtime and
children’s bedtime.
Literacy
 Find the story of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant by David
McKee. This is a good example showing colours and patterns
on an elephant.
 Find any other storybooks about the jungle and animals in the
jungle. Visit the library and/or a bookshop.
Mathematics
 Learn to sing ‘Five little cubs went out one day’. Use finger to
count.
 Create a line of animals. Use words like “in front of”, “next to”
and “behind”.
 Animal patterns. Look at different patterns that animals have;
some have spots, some have stripes. Draw some.
 Sing ‘Who built the Ark?’ and ‘The animals went in two by two.’
 Sort plastic animals by number of legs.
Understanding the World
 Adults should gain knowledge of jungle animals so that
questions can be answered.
 Find out what baby animals are called.
 Talk about male and female animals, e.g. lion and lioness and
the differences in their appearances.
Expressive Arts and Design
 Sing “Nellie the Elephant” and “Daddy’s taking us to the zoo
tomorrow.
 If there are any musical instruments available, try to make
noises like animals. Encourage loud bands for elephant and
triangle or bells for birds.
