Questions with a neighbor • Is Nationalism a good thing or not? • What could this possibly lead to? • How does the picture relate to where we are going next? • Nationalism A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one’s country. -Language -Customs -Geography -Look -History -Culture Causes of Nationalism • Printing Press: cheaper books and newspapers (1451 Johannes Gutenberg). • American Revolution: Declaration of Independence / Constitution / Independence. • French Revolution: Nation became sovereign. • Industrialization: things got bigger and better. • However, the French Revolution had inspired the rise of nationalistic movements in many European countries. • Following the defeat of Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna met to create a long-term PEACE settlement in Europe. Redrawing of the Map of Europe • The Congress’s purpose was to establish a balance of power in Europe and return monarchs to power. Some countries lost power / land. FRANCE lost its recent conquests while major changes affected the Netherlands, the states of the Rhine, the German Kingdom of Saxony, and various Italian territories. Russia took Finland and parts of Prussia. Congress of Vienna (1814 – 1815) LAND LOSS • The unification of Italy and of Germany resulted in upsetting the balance of power in Europe
