Free compost giveaway Kick-start your spring garden with local compost! Up to 64 gallons of compost will be available to all MSS customers on a first come first served basis. If you don’t have a truck, consider bringing reusable bags or buckets to keep your vehicle clean. This is where your compost is made: Industrial Composting Facility in Novato California compost every meal, every day, every week COMPOSTING ISN’T JUST FOR COOKS— it’s for anyone who throws out leftovers, stale bread, or pizza. It’s for everyone. That’s because composting is on the frontlines in the fight against climate change. Many people believe that throwing food scraps and organic material into a landfill is harmless because the materials decompose. However, most people are surprised to learn that when these materials break down in a landfill they rot anaerobically (without oxygen) and become powerful contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, landfills have become the third largest source of human-caused greenhouse gases in the U.S. In contrast, composting food waste, food soiled paper, and yard debris creates a valuable soil enhancer that replenishes depleted soils, protects against erosion, can replace synthetic fertilizers and helps retain water. Composting our organics protects air, water and soil quality. So what can you do to help? Make sure your food scraps and yard debris end up in your green cart! We’ll make sure that it stays out of the landfill and is composted into a valuable resource.
