Math 94
How to solve linear equations
How to find the slope of a line from a graph, 2 points, or an equation
How to find the x- and y-intercepts of an equation
How to graph linear equations (there are several acceptable methods)
How to write a linear equation in slope-intercept form
How to solve a linear equation graphically
How to solve a system of linear equations graphically and algebraically
How to explain in words what the slope of the line, y-intercept, and x-intercept mean in the context of a
application problem
How to set up and solve a linear equation from information given in an application (word) problem
Here are some practice problems. The answers are at the end. If you have questions come see me for
help. These problems will not be collected. They are for your review only. They may or may not
cover all of the above concepts. If you are unsure about some of the concepts, look in your book
and find the relevant section for additional practice (Chapters 1-4 were covered in Math 93). If
you are still not comfortable with the concept(s) come see me. Class time cannot be spent
covering material covered in other courses.
Solve:

3)
– 3 = 5x + 7
2(x + 5) = 3(x – 3)
Find the slope of the line:

4x + 5y = 35
4(x – 2) = 24
6 (x – 4) + 8(2x + 10) = 9(3x – 2) + 29
7) Calculate the slope for the line shown.
For the equation, 5x – 4y = 20
8)
Find the y-intercept
9)
Find the x-intercept
10) Find the slope of the line for the equation
11) Write the equation in slope intercept form
12) Graph the equation on graph paper
13)
Solve this system of equations graphically (by hand on graph paper) and algebraically:
4x + 3y = 24 and 5y = 10x – 10 Write answer as an ordered pair.
The graph of y = 2x – 8 is shown below. Use the graph to solve the equation and inequality (Do not
solve algebraically):
14) 2x – 8 = – 6
15) 2x – 8 > 2
Solve these word problems. Show appropriate algebra work. Be sure to

Identify the variable

Write an algebraic equation’

Solve it algebraically

Write answer in a complete sentence
16) If a 45-foot tree casts an 18-foot shadow, find the height of a tree whose shadow is 14.5

17) An investor will invest a total of $15,000 in two accounts. The first account is paying 4% annual
simple interest and the second is paying 3%. If he wants to earn $550 annual interest, how much
should he invest in each rate? (This problem can be worked with one of two variables. Can you do it both ways?)
