Two boys decide to save the stamps on a cereal box
to earn enough to get a lion. But due to the demand for
lions, the boys are sent other animals that end up
causing a disaster in the neighborhood.

Introduction: Show a variety of ads on boxes and from magazines that have prizes or
special offers. Have you every gotten a free prize inside a box of cereal or gotten
something for free?
Story time Activities: Have the class work on collecting something on a product that
they choose and record how long it takes to accomplish this goal and the amount of
money needed. This helps to show the economics of paying for a product just to try to
get something free.

How to Make the Lion Paper Plate Craft:
1. Draw the nose and mouth of the lion on the bottom of
the bowl.
2. Cut two round ears and a tail from construction paper.
3. Cut one quarter off of the large paper plate to make the
body.
4. Paint one of the paper plates orange around the outside
and pink or red in the middle.
5. When all the pieces are dry cut slits all the way around
the edge of the paper plate. Glue the ears to the back of
the bowl and then glue the bowl to the orange and pink
paper plate.
6. Glue the head to the body plate as shown in the picture.
Glue the tail to the body and draw on feet.
Discussion Questions

1. What did/could the boys do to express their disappointment to the
company about not receiving their lion?
(Send a letter, e-mail, call, visit to talk to a company
representative.)
2. What is supply and demand and how is this affecting the boys’ ability to
get their lion?
(Explain supply and demand and explore the fact that since
everyone in the neighborhood has a lion this has made it harder for the
company to fill their orders.)
3. Why is this type of advertising successful?
(It gets people to buy the product even when they have an excess
of it already purchased.)
4. Which animal would you want? Why?
