What is the early years pupil premium?
The early years pupil premium (EYPP) is the governments
additional funding scheme that aims to improve the education
provided for 3-4 year old children, who attend any early years
setting that provides education and care to under 5s,
such as a nursery or pre-school.
The EYPP allocates 53p per hour to a maximum of £302
per year, per eligible child.
Background:
Research has indicated that quality early years provision can
have a major impact on a child’s results at primary and
secondary level, and beyond.
The EYPP has the potential to hugely benefit children in early
years settings. The funding available aims to put all children, no
matter their background, on an equal footing by the time they
go to primary school.
Early years settings should assess the specific needs of their
children and plan interventions to address these such as pooling
several childrens funding to provide new play equipment or
create a new outside play space.

Nurseries can use the EYPP as they wish to demonstrate they
are investing funds ef fectively against measurable targets and
results. The money does not have to go directly to the child;
it can be pooled and used for valuable universal interventions
such as play provision.
Eligibility:
The EYPP is available for children aged 3-4 years old whose
parents are in receipt of certain benefits or who were formerly
in local authority care but who left care because they were
adopted or were subject to a special guardianship or child
arrangements order.
