Kleen Living Newsletter Worrying is like a rocking chair…it gives you something to do, but it gets you nowhere. – Glenn Turner January 2011 What Happens When Water Goes Where It Shouldn't? Indoor plumbing... It's hard to imagine living without it for very long. Clothes washers, toilets, dishwashers, showers, tubs, sinks, water heaters; all of our modern plumbing systems rely on water to enter the structure through pressurized pipes. And what comes in must go out. So water usually leaves buildings through sewer pipes fed by gravity or sometimes, pumps. It's a simple system, so we don't give it much thought until something goes wrong. A failure in either part of the system can cause major problems. When water goes where it should not, it could be anywhere from a slow leak to a flood. No matter. For the sake of simplicity, let's call it a water intrusion. All water intrusions fall into one of 3 Categories: Category 1-Clean water Category 2-Gray or unsanitary Category 3-Black or grossly contaminated The category of the water intrusion is based on where the water came from, where it is, how long it has been there, and the amount and type of contamination present. For example, water that comes from a broken water heater is Category 1 or clean water. However, if that water comes into contact with a significant amount of contamination such as chemicals, animal waste, or heavily soiled materials, it may quickly degrade to a Category 2 or 3 unsanitary water intrusion. Water that comes from a broken washing machine drain line (not supply line) or a broken dishwasher drain line would contain some soils, contaminants and detergents. This makes it a category 2 water intrusion. If that water were to remain untreated, over time it would degrade into Category 3 water as bacteria and fungi began to multiply in the contaminated water. Any water that comes from a continued on pg 2 Carpets Cleaned Right or Cleaned FREE! 602 Ashford Court Champaign, IL 61822 www.KleenRite.net (217) 351-4930 Thank You to the following clients for referring their friends to KleenRite: Howard & Bev Schweighart, Cory Vandeveer- The Handyman Felicia Harrington, Caprice Hunt, Walt & Veronica Steffen Break the Cycle of Chronic Pain If you suffer from aches and pains every day, you may be in a cycle that develops over time. She can you have a sedentary job, try to get up at least once every two develop a plan to reduce stress on your body hours for a short walk or moderate stretching. and prevent further damage so you can heal. "Water Intrusion" from front cover sewer pipe is Category 3- grossly contaminated. Note that this is regardless of the clarity of the water. Remember, it is not what you can see that we are concerned with. It is disease-causing bacteria and viruses that create the health risk. If a pipe leaks inside a wall, it can go undetected for months, even years, causing extensive damage to the structure. Wood rots, mold grows and walls and floors deteriorate, causing thousands of dollars in damage. A sudden break or failure in a pipe, supply line, toilet tank or water heater can cause catastrophic property damage, especially if it goes undiscovered for a prolonged period. Furniture, electronics, rugs and other contents may be damaged. Drywall ceilings may collapse. Wood floors can buckle. The amount of damage depends on the amount of water and the length of time materials are exposed to the water. 2 When water cannot leave the structure, due to a clogged sewer line, it has to go somewhere. Most often, the contaminated water backs up into toilets or tubs, sometimes overflowing and creating a major health risk especially for: young children, the elderly, anyone with recent illness or surgery, persons with a weak immune system. In other instances, the sewer line may break and leak into the crawl space below the house. This causes odors, mold growth and possible health consequences. With so many fixtures and appliances that use water, it is likely that your home will eventually suffer some kind of water intrusion. If that happens, it is important to follow these suggestions: Act quickly to stop the leak. Sometimes this requires turning off the water to the building. Eliminate safety hazards. Turn off electricity to the affected area if you can safely do so. Stay out of the area if the ceiling drywall is saturated. Wet drywall ceilings can fall. Avoid contact with Category 3 water or items saturated with it. Move contents and furnishings out of the affected area if possible. Depending on the amount of damage, you may want to call your insurance company to confirm coverage and file a claim. Drying your home requires training, the right equipment and experience. Don't take a chance on doing it yourself. If proper steps are not taken, additional damage to your home will occur. Call KleenRite to come out and help restore your home. We will carefully assess the situation, and develop a restoration plan. We will remove the water, dry your structure and contents and return your home back to normal as quickly as possible. How to Avoid Airport Delays Traveling by air during the winter months can lead to delays or problems due to weather. To ensure that you minimize your chances of getting stuck, try to get a non-stop flight. This way you eliminate your chance of missing connecting flights. If you must fly with a connection, give yourself enough time between flights to account for delays. Book your first leg as early in the morning as possible. This way, if your flight is delayed, you have more options for alternate flights without having to spend the night in an airport.
