A family-friendly museum with amazingly
diverse collections. The museum was
established 125 years ago and offers
local people and visitors to the town the
opportunity to explore art, culture and
history from Hastings and around the world.
Since reopening to the public in 2016,
Hastings Pier has hosted a wide range
of events – from live music concerts
headlined by international names
to a summer circus, open-air cinema
screenings, art installations and a big
Christmas event (complete with attractions
and markets). There is much more to
come, as well as traditional promenading,
shopping, dining and learning. Hastings
Pier is also available for hire.
Soak up the history of the sea in this unique
multisensory charitable trust museum. Hear
the stories, see artefacts from local historic
shipwrecks and enjoy the audio-visual and
touch-screen technology.
Deep in the heart of Hastings West Hill
lies the Smugglers Adventure, acres of
caverns that conceal the thrilling history
of smuggling. More than 70 life-size
characters, interactive displays, eerie
lighting, sound effects and dramatic
recreations bring this mysterious and often
bloody world vividly to life.
Open: Please see website for details.
There are workshops and talks for groups
at the museum, as well as guided tours
of the wreck of the Amsterdam (1749), the

are listed on the website.

Carr Taylor Vineyards, in Westfield, have
won many awards for their wines.
Widely known as the best small zoo in
Europe, Drusillas Park offers a fun-tastic day
out that includes hundreds of exotic animals,
from monkeys and meerkats to penguins and
pandas. However, animals are only half the
fun! Kids will adore the themed adventure
play areas including Go Wild!, Go Bananas!
Amazon Adventure, plus there’s Hello Kitty
Secret Garden and the ultimate splash pad
experience, Get Wet! Don’t miss Drusillas
Park’s brand new attraction for 2017, Go
Safari! This totally wild new area is expected
to open in June and will combine an African
theme with three exciting children’s rides;
the Hippopotobus, Flying Cheetahs and the
Safari Express train. Open: Daily from 10am
The water pumps, many of them triple
expansion steam driven and dating
from 1889, are currently demonstrated
by compressed air. Located in two tall
Engine Houses displaying Art Deco styles
of architecture that nestle in the tranquil
countryside of the Brede Valley. Step back
in time and soak up the atmosphere of
heavy engines that supplied reliable and
safe water to Hastings and surrounding
villages. Free parking. Light refreshments
and guided tours.
Great Dixter, birthplace and home of the
late gardening writer Christopher Lloyd, was
built in c1460 and boasts one of the largest
surviving timber framed halls in the country.
Of particular note is the antique furniture and
needlework collection. Restored by Sir Edwin
Lutyens in 1910, the gardens are now the
hallmark of Christopher Lloyd with a variety
of clipped topiary, wild meadow flowers,
mixed borders (including the famous Long
Border), natural ponds and the startlingly
exuberant exotic garden. Plant nursery and
gift shop on site with free parking.
A self-guided trail is just £1.50. Guided
tours, with or without buffet lunch, are by
prior arrangement.
Picnic by the pond or have tea, coffee
and cakes in the shop.
Visitors can buy from a selection of wines,
preserves, gifts or hampers.
