Scientific Notation Speed
The object of this game is to get the most answers correct before time runs out. This
game can be played by groups of 2 or more players.
Materials needed:
Some kind of timing device that will time 1 minute
Set of Scientific Notation sheets for each player (included)
Paper and pencil for each player
Print a set of Scientific Notation sheets on card stock for each set of games you are
making. Laminate the card stock for longer durability. Cut the card sheets in half longways and then cut each of those in half. Each sheet makes four worksheets.
Select the different types of cards based on student ability. There are two sets of cards to
convert Scientific Notation with a positive base 10 exponent to standard form, two sets
to convert standard numbers greater than zero to Scientific Notation, two sets to convert
Scientific Notation numbers with a negative base 10 exponent to standard form, two sets
to convert numbers less than zero to Scientific Notation, two sets with mixed positive and
negative Scientific Notation numbers to be converted to standard format and two sets of
standard numbers that include standard numbers greater than zero and less than zero to be
converted to Scientific Notation. Print, laminate, and cut out a set of Answer Cards that
students may use to check their work. Note: You may want to print the answer key on
different color card stock to keep them separate from the play sheets.
Each player will receive a Scientific Notation sheet. Players should make sure they have
the same worksheet number so that they are answering the same questions. The timer
should be set for 1 minute (or longer depending on the ability of the students playing).
One player starts the timer to signify the start of the round. Each player tries to correctly
answer as many questions on the work Scientific Notation sheet as they can before time
runs out. Players should work the conversions out on their own paper and circle their
answer for each problem. When time is up, players compare answers to check each
other’s work. If there is a discrepancy in the answers, the players must work the problem
out together to see who is correct. If there is still a disagreement, students can check the
answer sheet for that card or ask their teacher who has the correct answer.
Each player will receive a point for each question answered. The player with the most
points when all rounds have been played (or when the teacher calls time) is declared the
winner.
