The Sundae Times PO Box 182395, Shelby Twp., MI 48318-2395 ● 586.254.1012 ● www.ashbysicecream.com June 2015 MI Pot Hole Ice Cream Shoots to the Top of the List in Sales! Inside this issue: News from Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream Introducing Quarts After May sales were calculated, it became apparent that our new Michigan Pot Hole Ice Cream really is a winner. Not only for Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream, but for the State of Michigan as well, since Ashby’s will donate1% of sales of this flavor to the State of Michigan to help fix our roads. While the amount won’t be enough to fix too many holes, it has already accomplished what we set out to do: keep the conversation going about ways to pay for and fix our terrible roads and bridges. Although the first “fix” was a soundly defeated sales tax increase, plan B promises to use money from the new budget and raise registration fees for some vehicle types. How ever the MDOT finds the money, we know we have tried to help one scoop at a time! MI Pot Hole became our 9th best seller in May sales—unheard of for a brand-new flavor, especially since the ice cream season has barely begun. Thank you Ashby’s customers and fans! Ashby’s Sterling’s award‐winning ice cream has created such a buzz and “cult‐like” following over the years, that the demand for some of the flavors to be available in re‐ tail packages has been over whelming for the company. A line of ten popular flavors is now available for our loyal fans to purchase from you. They can enjoy ice cream lat‐ er with their family and friends after a great meal, or with their own homemade desserts. Ask your distributor for pricing and availability. Using a large serving dish, or banana boat, place a fourounce scoop of one of Ashby’s Sterling’s creamy vanilla flavors and one scoop of strawberry into the dish. Top the strawberry scoop with blueberry sauce and add a ladle of strawberry, or raspberry sauce, to the vanilla scoop. Then garnish with whipped cream, two fresh strawberries, and a few fresh blueberries. Add a mini American flag. Serve with two spoons and a “thank you for your service” if the customer is a veteran! Patriotic Cooler: Using a clear cup, layer blue raspberry slush, vanilla ice cream, and then strawberry slush. Top with whipped cream and a cherry for a red, white, and blue treat. America the Beautiful Cake Start with four 9” vanilla layer cakes. Blend 1 cup boiling water into a 3 oz. package of red gelatin flavor until dissolved (about 2 minutes). Add 1/2 cup cold water and mix well. Repeat with a blue gelatin flavor. Using a chop stick, or meat fork, polk holes 1-2” apart in the cake layers and pour one gelatin flavor over 2 layers each. Refrigerate 3 hours. To assemble a cake, place one layer of cake on a 10” cardboard round, add a 2” layer of vanilla ice cream, then “frost” with Whipping Ice, Rich’s Topping, Better Cream, etc. Decorate as desired with red, white, and blue accents. Package and keep frozen. Editor’s Note: A new source for cake boxes is available. Uline, based in IL carries a full line of cake boxes, white and gold pads, along with cupcake inserts. Station 66 in Battle Creek, MI who sells donuts, along with ice cream, produce, and specialty products has created the Pot Hole Sundae featuring AS Michigan Pot Hole ice cream, hot fudge, a donut “tire”, whipped cream, and chocolate cookie crumbs for garnish. Yum! One of our long-time ice cream retailers who is now retired shared her promotion from a while back, after seeing us on television introducing Pot Hole ice cream. She cross promoted with a nearby tire store by giving the owner some coupons for pot hole sundaes, similar to the one above, that they would give to their customers who came in for tire repair. In turn, she would hand her customers the tire store’s coupon when they purchased the sundae. A win—win for both companies! Other promotion ideas discussed include taking ice cream (or coupons) out to the local road crew as they patch the road in front of, or near your store. It may be a major headache having your road under construction, but in the long run, you will enjoy much more traffic when it is fixed! You Wanted to Know: Q. My milkshakes don’t always come out thick and rich like they should. What is happening? A. Milk shakes and malts are expected to be thick and rich when they are served. However, if too much milk is added, or they are left on the mixer too long, they can become thin and frothy. It takes practice, but generally 30 seconds is about the right amount of time it takes for a shake to blend all ingredients together. Start with the proper scoop, such as a Zeroll #10 scoop that will dip a nice round ball of 4 oz. of ice cream. Two scoops of ice cream, 6 oz. of milk, and 1-2 oz. of flavoring should yield a 16 oz. drink every time, without waste. Garnish with whipped cream, a drizzle of flavored syrup or sprinkles, and a cherry for full, dramatic effect. A long handled spoon and a straw will be needed as well. Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream has ice cream drink menu/ table cards available for advertising. Questions?
