Gateway to Grade Points -10
It
is a known fact that S.S.C. Board of
Andhra Pradesh had made some drastic modifications in English syllabus as
well as in Question Paper pattern. However
change is constant, it is not a big constraint for
the students to secure 10 grade points in the
Examination. Thorough preparation, meticulous
planning, acquisition of sufficient knowledge in
grammar certainly enriches their performance in
the examination. Now if we analyse the pattern,
S.S.C English is segregated as Paper - I and
Paper - II covering the Parts A and B related to
textual aspects and text independent areas
respectively.
Preparation of Paper - II
★ Paper -II is completely text independent consisting of Unseen Passages and information
transfer in the form of a Table/ Pie - chart/
Tree - diagram.
★ Reading, Observation and Analytical skills are
tested where as in Letter Writing (Formal/
Informal) and in News Report, the Writing
skills are analysed keeping in view of the format that is to be followed.
★ Students should be logical enough to guess
the right and meaningful order of any given
story. In Grammar, students should have a
grip over Antonyms, Synonyms, Spellings,
Idioms, Phrasal Verbs, One Word
Substitutes, etc. to score full marks.
Paper - I
Part - A: Reading Comprehension - 15 Marks
Creative Writing
- 10 Marks
Part - B: Grammar
- 15 Marks
Preparation of Paper - I
★ Paper-I is totally textual based. It is advised to
read the text book thoroughly covering all A,
B and C Reading units. Students should be
well - versed with the speaker of the content
and the context of all the units. The answers
should be short and relevant to the topic.
★ Learn to understand figures of speech prescribed in the curriculum - Simile, Metaphor
and Personification. Students should have a
good knowledge in the textual grammar given
at the end of every unit. Having proficiency in
Voice, Direct and Indirect Speech, Relative
and Adverbial Clauses, Phrases, etc. would
be an added advantage.
PAPER - I
★ Regarding Creative Writing, students should
have a good command over the language and
should know the correct sequence of details of
the first three units. This would help them when
they write a Conversation/ Description/ Diary
Entry/ Script for Speech. Be aware of the
themes mentioned in the Text Book.
★ Gain awareness of current affairs too so that
you can write on the most recent incidents.
Good presentation of the answer will always
be rewarded with the best marks.

such a thing before. How could he do it? He
rotated himself at such speed. I couldn't make

vampire? Should I tell it to others and inform the
police about him? No, that would be a too hasty
step. I don't even know him. Should I follow him
and find out the reality about him or should I
simply forget it? My heart missed a beat and my

Mobile phone has become a toy in the
hands of the young and the old alike. You
have learnt from the statistics given by the
traffic police that the danger posed by the
use of mobile while driving has not become
down inspite of the measures taken by the
police. Give a factual description pointing
out the dangers encountered in using mobile
phones while driving.
Some years ago, the mobile phone was considered to be a thing of luxury and a commodity
for the rich. Very few people, perhaps one
among thousands, could be seen talking on a
mobile phone. But now mobile phones have
become so common that hardly anybody takes
notice of them. They can be seen in the hands
of the young and the old alike. Even schoolgoing boys and girls can be seen carrying
mobile phones in their hands. Often we see
people using their mobile while driving. But this
is more often disobeyed than obeyed. The statistics provided by the traffic police clearly show
that the danger posed by the people. The mobile
users themselves will have to realize the difficulties and dangers they cause not only to others
but also themselves. Using mobiles while driving
is very dangerous. To do so causes many serious accidents. The mobile users must follow
traffic rules and regulations and those break the
law should be given a deterrent punishment so
that it can serve as a lesson for others.

Answer
DIRECT & INDIRECT SPEECH
Good morning,
Respected teachers and my dear friends.
Today, I stand before you to throw light on a few
successful people we have read about in newspapers and magazines.
Friends! When we look at such successful
people we wish we too were successful like
them. We think they are quite lucky to be successful but do you know that they are successful because of their failures?
Friends, the moment we see a bulb we think
of Thomas Alva Edison. Do you know that he was
partially deaf and his teacher refused to teach him
when he was very young and called him stupid?
Well, think of Colonel Sanders, at the age of
65 he started selling his mother's recipe of making chicken. Friends, if you had to go door to
door to sell your product how many doors would
you knock? May be 10, 20 or 50. We would definitely give up the effort after it. But do you know
that he knocked more than a thousand doors
and today he stands here for his effort?
Friends, through these examples I only try to
say that all the great and successful people
were many times dejected and did also become
a laughing stock. People don't appreciate us
unless we prove ourselves.
So always try and never give up!

''Before a year after my fifth voyage, I was
on my sixth voyage, the longest of all my voyages. As we set sail we had a calm sea. After
some days the weather grew bad and huge
waves threatened to drown us.
One afternoon, the captain of the ship looked
troubled. In desperation, he tore off his turban
and paced the deck. He told us that the ship was
out of control and soon the ship would crash into
a high, rocky mountain. That would mean that we
would all be dead. As he had said in a quarter of
an hour, our ship did crash into a huge mountain
and the ship was in smithers. Good luck and
God's blessings saved all aboard. We swam to a
narrow strip of land at the foot of the mountain.
We soon recovered some food and goods from
the shipwreck but it was not heartening news at
all. We were caught between a high, steep
mountain and a raging sea.
We had divided the food equally amongst
ourselves but we knew the food wouldn't last
long. My companions were worried and hopeless but I kept heart. I went to the seashore
everyday and gathered whatever swept over
from our wrecked ship to the shore. Once when
I explored the mountains, I discovered hoards of
diamonds, rubies and pearls. I gathered some of
them and kept in a safe place thinking of selling
them if I got out of the situation''.

3. The captain tore off his turban.
2. We swam to a narrow strip of land.
Example - 2
The human population has been expanding
and now destroying the very land upon which
we live. Nearly six tonne of carbon dioxide is
released by people into the air annually. As a
result of our activities, the atmospheric concentration of this heat trapping gas has risen to
more than thirty percent. Life on earth depends
on carbon dioxide to regulate the temperature of
our planet. If carbon dioxide is released in
excess it creates a heat - trapping blanket over
the atmosphere.
Since carbon dioxide contributes to global
warming, the increase in population makes the
problem worse. Trees take up carbon dioxide
and give us oxygen. But we are cutting the tress
for our purposes. So there is a massive rise in
green house gases. Hence population explosion
is the fundamental factor that has led to global
warming.
Now arrange the following jumbled sentences in a sequential and meaningful order.
1. Trees absorb carbon dioxide which we
breathe out.
2. Excess of carbon dioxide is responsible for
global warming.
3. We are deforesting because we use trees for
our homes etc.
4. Global warming increases as the population
increases.
5. Much of the carbon dioxide is released by
people annually.
Answer

Dear Preethi,
I am fine and hope this letter finds you in
pink. It is a long time since I received a letter
from you. What are the things with you? I
have been preparing well for the forthcoming
examinations very well. In this letter I would
like to write to you about the need and importance of 'Clean India'.
As we know, our Prime Minister, Narendra
Modi launched the 'Swachch Bharat' (Clean
India) on 2 October, 2014 at Rajghat, New
Delhi. 'Clean India' is a national level campaign run by the Indian Government to cover
all the backward statutory towns to make
them clean. The concept of 'Swachch Bharat'
(Clean India) is to provide sanitation facilities
to every family, including toilets, solid and liquid waste disposal systems, village cleanliness and safe and adequate drinking water
supply. I think the 'Clean India' campaign is a
much needed one to our villages as well as
towns and cities. We gained freedom under
the leadership of Gandhiji, but his dream of
clean India is still unfulfilled. According to
Gandhiji, ''Sanitation is more important than
independence.'' I feel that cleanliness is most
important for physical well-being and a
healthy environment. It is essential for everyone to learn about cleanliness, hygiene and
sanitation. The clean surroundings will make
ours a prosperous country. I really appreciate
Mr. Modi for his launching the nation-wide
cleanliness campaign, ''Swachch Bharat'' on
the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth
anniversary. Now, I want to know about your
views on 'Clean India'. I am awaiting your
reply.
My best wishes to your parents.
Yours lovingly,
Deepika.

Since the summer has set in, as usual we

'Fire! Fire!'
The shouts reached Harry, who was sleeping in a room on the top floor of his uncle's
house. He sat up and looked around with wideopen eyes. Did he have a bad dream or did he
really hear those shouts? He sniffed hard and
smelt smoke. There really was a fire! There was
no time to lose; he had to get out of the house
immediately. He jumped out of the bed and
opened the door. Smoke was every where.
Harry ran without knowing where he was going,
for he could not see clearly because of the thick
smoke. But he saw flames all around him and
the wooden floor was hot under his bare feet.
Harry was frightened. He saw an open door
and ran into the room he was groping his way
towards the window so that he could jump out
when he felt something soft. It looked like a bundle of clothes; Harry picked it up to protect his
face from the smoke and the heat. Just then, the
floor gave way and he fell to the floor below.
He saw the doorway in front and rushed
out, with the bundle over his face. He found a
huge crowd watching the house burn. A moment
later, the bundle gave out a little cry. Harry nearly dropped the bundle in his surprise.

India has come a long way since the
Bengal Famine of 1943. The food situation in
India, once characterized by chronic shortages
and the spectrum of famines, has changed dramatically over the years. From being the biggest
recipient of PL-480 during the 1950 and 1960s,
India today is relatively self-sufficient in food
grain at the levels of incomes and prices. In fact,
it has marginal surpluses. The General
Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has
been signed with India as one of the signatories,
under which all countries will have gradually
open up their agricultural sectors. It is therefore,
neither feasible nor desirable to keep India's
food grain sector insulated from world markets.

My dear brother - in - law,
Hope you are faring well with your work! I
want to share my views on a bank robbery with
you.
Perhaps you might also have seen the
report in 'The Indian Times' about the bank robbery which occurred in Mumbai.
The A.B.C bank in Mumbai was robbed by
four masked persons having guns in their
hands. They threatened the manager and forced
him to open the lockers. One clerk who tried to
raise his voice was knocked down. He was
badly injured and is still being treated in the
hospital. The robbers filled their bags with gold
me everything I had asked you for. I even
remember the way you wept when I hurt
myself while playing. Father you have always
been the best but unfortunately I could not be
a good daughter. In my endeavour to acquire
everything I can and my selfishness I neglected you. I become so materialistic that I calculated the profit I could make from every transaction. I did not care to give you medicine
when you were suffering from headache. I
was just interested in the bureau and the
clock. I am a worthless daughter. I'm
ashamed of myself. But father I have
changed. I beg you to forgive me. I promise to
take care of you from this moment. Believe
me, I don't say this for your money. I will give
you medicines on time, cook your favourite
dishes and give you all the attention you
need. I promise to be a good daughter from
this moment.

Today is the day I rediscovered myself. Oh!
How I had been longing to find my name for the
last one week. I was feeling out of peace, irritated and lost. It's all my fault. I had actually
indulged so much in swabbing and cleaning,
that I myself forgot my identity. It is the biggest
mistake I have done till now. I will never repeat
it. I will ask hubby to permit me to do a job. If he
doesn't I will paint and develop my skills. I will
fight for my rights and be an independent
woman henceforth. Tonight I will go to bed
peacefully. Thank you God for this day. Bye dear
diary.

car. The manager informed the police. They are
investigating.
See, brother-in-law, people believe that their
valuables and money are safe in bank. But on
seeing this incident, they may lose belief in
banks as well as in the safety of banks.
I want to know your opinion in this regard.
Waiting for your reply.
Yours lovingly,
Venkat.

Mumbai, January 24, 2017.
People believe valuables are safe in
banks rather than at home. But is it true?
The robbery in 'ABC' bank has posed big
question to all the depositors.
Yesterday four people with masks on
their faces and guns in their hands barged
into the bank. Thy threatened the people
that they would shoot them if they did not
obey them. They broke open the lockers
and looted all the money and gold in them.
One man who tried to raise an alarm was
knocked down. He was injured and is being
treated in the hospital.
The incident took place at 3 p.m. One of
the goons pointed a gun at the manager and
forced him to open the lockers. It did not
take them long to do their dirty business.
They filled their bags and ran out. They had
come in a car. One of them had left a few
minutes early and kept the car ready for the
others to flee. The others jumped into the
car and drove off at a dangerous speed. The
manager then called the police. The police
took the finger prints on the lockers. They
have assured people not to panic. They
would nab the miscreants at the earliest.

b) Good evening all of you!
This evening I want to express my views on
the position of women. In olden days, women
were respected. There were women scholars
like Maitreyi and Gargi. They had education
equal to that of men. But during the medieval
ages men exerted their authority over women.
During the later ages, their position became
worse.
During this present age, women are showing equal competence in every field. But it is sad
to say that even in these modern times, women
are being treated as slaves. We see in the
newspapers about the atrocities on women.
They are at the beck and call of their husbands.
Man marries a girl for her beauty and the dowry
he gets. As soon as she becomes a housewife,
she is treated as a slave. She does hard work
without having any rest.
So let us view their situation seriously and
give them an equal status along with men.

thought of escaping from him. Fortunately
he escaped from his cruel master. While
crossing the forest he saw a lion. The lion
was crying in pain. The slave wanted to

the lion had a thorn in its foot which couldn't
come out. The slave took out the thorn from

went his way. The slave also went his way
but he was caught again by the master's

Comprehension Passage for Practice
★ Read the following passage and answer
the questions that follow:
Speech is a great blessing but it can also be
great curse, for while it helps us to make our
intentions and desires known to our fellows. It
can also if we use it carelessly, make our attitude completely misunderstood. A slip of the
tongue, the use of unusual word, or of an
ambiguous word, and so on, may create an
enemy where we had hoped to win a friend.
Again, different classes of people use different
vocabularies, and the ordinary speech of an
educated may strike an uneducated listener as
pompous. Unwittingly, we may use a word which
bears a different meaning to our listener from
what it does to mean of our own class. Thus
speech is not a gift to use lightly without thought,
but one which demands careful handling. Only a
fool will express himself alike to all kinds and
conditions to men.
