In reading our cover story “Active Engagement” by Karen Leggett, I was struck by how apropos Archimedes words are to the entrepreneurial efforts of the international education students profiled in the piece. Leggett interviewed Tobias Rose-Stockwell who studied abroad in South Africa while he was a student at Allegheny College and went on to create Human Translation, an organization whose Web site features stories, photographs and artwork that Rose-Stockwell created and collected in Cambodia and Thailand. This organization now works with groups like Engineers Without Borders to help provide needed infrastructure in developing countries. About the work of Human Translations, Rose-Stockwell says, “We are the fulcrum to make other things happen.” His is only one of the many fascinating stories of students whose international education experiences inspired them to strike out to do something about poverty, illiteracy, conflict, and more in a myriad of locations around the globe. Maybe the solution for providing the learning outcomes employers are looking for from higher education already exists in international education programs.
