June 2015 Newsletter Goodbye Ms. Brown I would like to take this opportunity to let the Queenston Community know Ms. Brown has been promoted to principal at Forest Glen PS. Ms. Brown has done remarkable work with kids, parents and teachers, contributing to making Queenston a special place to be. Welcome Mr. Richards We welcome Scott Richards who will be the new Vice-Principal at Queenston. He is coming from Springfield Public School, so he is already familiar with the community and some of the kids. We are lucky to be getting a Vice-Principal with experience. I am sure we will all help him to feel at home. Other Goodbyes We would like to extend heartfelt goodbyes to Ms. Cowan and Ms. Read who are leaving for opportunities at other schools. Ms. Heenan will also be at Queenston less as she is splitting her time between two schools. A big thank you to these teachers for all of the wonderful contributions they have made to Queenston over the years. You helped to make students successful both academically and socially. We will miss you. Best of luck in your future endeavors! School Council Our next and final school council meeting will take place on Thursday, June 18. The meeting will be in the library and start at 6:30pm. Baby sitting will be provided. We plan to review the parent handbook and Bring Your Own Device policy. Chess Tournament The Queenston Chess team did a fantastic job at the Board chess tournament. Kids competed against students from approximately 70 schools from across Peel. Congratulations to Jonathon who took first place for the primary student tournament, and the Queenston school team who won the Primary school Championship. Other notable mentions… Rayyan came in 4th and Cameron came in 6th at the primary level and Joshua came in 8th at the grade 4 level. Congratulation to these students and for all the students who participate in chess club since November. It was a huge time commitment and all the students should be recognized for their effort. Hot Weather On days over 25 degrees, we will plan to sell freezies as a treat and to help cool students down in the hot sun. Freezies will cost 50 cents. Typically we will make an announcement to students the day before. Change NOW Committee Presents: Week of WE (June 9-12) Change Now Committee is pleased to bring you our 5th Annual Week of WE, Tuesday, June 9th to Friday, June 12th (our Mini-WE Day)! Over the course of the 4 days, students will be able to participate in a variety of educational and fundraising activities, led by our very own CNC Leadership Team, to help students become active global citizens. All proceeds collected will be added to our WE Create Change (GOATs) Campaign, as part of Free the Children's Year of Empowerment. A detailed schedule of events will be sent home separately. Be the Change!! Bussing for 2014-2015 If you qualified for bussing this year, it does not necessarily mean you qualify next year. You must check whether you are eligible for bussing by going to the following website: http://businfo.stopr.ca/. It is critical that everyone who takes a bus check the website to confirm bussing. If your child does not qualify for bussing, you will need to make arrangements to drive, walk your child to school, or have them walk with friends. You have the summer to practice or make alternative arrangements. Library The last day for returning books to the library is June 12th. Thank you in advance to all the families who returned books on time and in good condition. Letters will be sent out for all overdue books. Health Please note that students will be taking home their medications on June 25th. They will also be taking home a medical form that you must complete and return to school during the last week of August, assuming you would like to send and keep medications at school again next year. Thank you for your co-operation. Movie Day We will be watching the movie, “Big Hero 6” as a culminating activity on the last day of school. Fun Fair Typically we run a fun fair in mid-June. Secondary teachers and students make significant contributions towards the success of the fun fair. Given the recent job action, there is not enough time to pull the fun fair together. We will be moving the fun fair to mid Sept. Grade 8 Grad Grade 8s will be involved in the following graduation activities on Wednesday, June 24th: Graduation ceremony—1:45 (at Queenston) Graduation Dance — 5:00-8:00pm Food will be provided. A more detailed letter about graduation will follow shortly. Ramadan We have a large Muslim community at Queenston. During the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. During this month, Muslims are called upon to use this month to re-evaluate their lives, purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice. This year, Ramadan occurs from June 17th-July 17th.
