Be righteous Do justice Seek righteousness
The Bible’s first mention of “righteous” is a description of Noah in Genesis 6:9b Noah was a righteous
man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God. The first mention of “justice” and
“righteousness” comes when God is describing Abraham in Genesis 18: 19 No, for I have chosen him,
that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing
righteousness and justice; so that the LORD may bring about for Abraham what he has promised him."
If we were to pick an admirable goal for ourselves, we might want to be righteous and just.
There are also commands early on in the Bible for God’s people to do justice and seek justice in Exodus,
but perhaps the strongest exhortation is found later in Deuteronomy 16: 20 Justice, and only justice, you
shall pursue, so that you may live and occupy the land that the LORD your God is giving you. This
instruction clearly places a high priority on justice.
Jesus condemns those who give the appearance of concern for justice, but neglect justice in interactions
with people: Matthew 23: 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and
cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you
ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but
swallow a camel!
The final bit of advice from God comes in Revelation 22: 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still
be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy." 12 "See, I am coming soon; my reward is
with me, to repay according to everyone's work.
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good (people) to do nothing.
Pastor Harvey Johnson

PRAY
FOR
PEACE
In this sad and tragic time of war and terrorism, we pray for our men and women in the
military, our President, and Congress. We pray for the innocent who suffer and die. We
pray for every effort to bring peace on God’s earth and an end to national, ethnic and
religious beliefs that foster fear, mistrust, arrogance, intolerance, hatred, torture, and
killing.
FREE TRANPORTATION TO AND FROM MESSIAH WORSHIP SERVICES
Thanks to the generosity of a Messiah member, we now provide free transportation
to and from Messiah. Simply call ACTION CAB AND COURIER, 381-1010, to make
arrangements and tell them to bill Messiah for your fare.

Messiah Church opens the door for a free meal on every Saturday Night, serving 4:30 to 5:30 PM.

you are regulars – which is a huge support. There are also regular co-workers from other
churches. The sign up poster is down in the fellowship hall, near the coffee.
Help is especially needed to SERVE the meal – this means just come from 4:00 to 6:00.
8-10 people are needed each Saturday.
SAINT FRANCIS MEDICAL CENTER / SUPER SAVER / ROBERTS MILK / HY-VEE / SAM’S
CLUB We continue to be so grateful that some of the meal needs are supplied by these

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS!
What an exciting month for Sunday School. The weather has been a little unpredictable
this last month, and when isn't it. This time last year temperatures where way above
normal, and we reached a high of 88 degrees on March 31. This year Easter Sunday is on
March 31st. The Sunday School will be serving Easter Breakfast between services from
9:30-10:30 AM. The menu will include French toast, scrambled eggs, sausage links, fruit,
orange juice, muffins and more. There will be a free will offering, with all money raised
going to the Sunday School kids, to purchase items from God's global barnyard, your support is appreciated! We would also like to thank the people who donate to the cause; your
support is unwavering! The placemats on each table were all done by the Sunday School
kids, so take a moment to enjoy the artistic abilities of everyone. The kids learn many
wonderful things about how God's love plays a role in everyone's life, every day. The
teachers are so inspiring with the lessons they give each week; I can only encourage you as
parents to reap the knowledge that each teacher presents to your child, you will be amazed!
The Easter Egg hunt was well attended on Saturday March 23rd! THANK-YOU to Courtney
Berg, Miranda Berg, Christina Cox for putting the effort in, to make it a success for the
kids! I again am truly BLESSED to have such a wonderful staff, the BEST of the BEST,
please thank them for their efforts and keep them in your prayers; they include Melissa
Anderson, Pat Tatro, Shawn & Lana Myers, Jeff &Teresa Mueller, Donna Callihan, Dena
Brooks, Ed Sowl, Courtney Berg. Christ has risen! He has risen indeed!

DVD MINISTRY—If you are homebound or have had surgery or an illness and can’t come to worship
on Sunday mornings, we offer a DVD of the worship service for you to watch in your home. Just call
the church office (382-3471) and we can set you up with a DVD player. If you have a DVD player we
can get a copy of the DVD mailed to you or have it delivered. All you have to do is let us know!
AN EASTER BREAKFAST will be served between services from 9:30-10:30 in the fellowship hall
on Easter Sunday. A free-will offering will be taken for the meal and all proceeds will be used by the
Sunday School kids to help the ELCA Good Gifts Program by picking items out of God’s Global Barnyard.
EASTER CANTATA—The Wood River Community Choir in its 11th year and the Grand Island Interfaith Choir, which has been in existence for over 30 years, have joined forces and will present their
annual Easter Cantata on Easter Sunday, March 31st at 3 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 2103
West Anna Street, Grand Island. The 45 member choir will perform “Once Upon a Tree” by Pepper
Choplin, and under the direction of Vincent Boudreau. Choir members are from Cairo, Campbell,
Grand Island, Gibbon, Kenesaw, Ravena, Shelton and Wood River. They also did a performance on
Palm Sunday at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Center.
A SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING will be held Sunday, April 14th at 11:45 AM. We
will have only one service on April 14th at 10:45 AM. Sunday School and Coffee Fellowship will
be held at the regular time at 9:40 AM. The congregational meeting will immediately follow the
10:45 service. Items on the agenda are the Lay Minister Position and the South vacant lot. The
church council wanted everyone to have a voice on the agenda items and felt that one service
would better serve our needs as a congregation on April 14th. We thank everyone for attending
the congregational
annual meeting on January 27th, and the concerns brought forward. We
hope everyone can attend this special meeting on April 14th as each member is an important
voice to our church.
CONFIRMATION CLASS will resume in April. We will meet Wednesday, April 10, 17 & 24 at 7 PM.
Parents are asked to attend these last three sessions with their child. For the final three sessions we
will have presenters leading forums on youth behavior, including Steve Miles, Ellis & Diane Collins,

HEALTH MINISTRY NEWS – April 2013
The month of April, nationally, has some areas of focus including Earth Day, Organ
Donation Day and Autism Awareness Day . . . just what you wanted to know!!
It would take more than a blurb to discuss any of those topics and so I am choosing
to just share some short “pieces” to ponder . . .
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a
pretty and well preserved body but rather to slide in broadside thoroughly used up
and totally worn out. If you think about that. . .it holds wisdom and truth!
How about Courage is not the towering oak that sees storms come and go...it is the
fragile blossom that opens in the storm. So…those of you who feel you have been
dealt a ”tough deck of cards”. . . focus on the kernel of wisdom learned by the
experience. Poor me never heals anything!
Simple but true…practice the following—
Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly and leave the rest to God!
For those of you, who want some fun and some great coffee and conversation time,
come to the Saturday morning exercise class. Just watching will get your giggles
going!!
Blood pressures will be taken between services on April 21.
Happy Springtime to each of you!
Sonja Simpson RN MSN, Parish Nurse
