The first mention of “justice” and “righteousness” comes when God is describing Abraham in Genesis 18: 19 No, for I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice; so that the LORD may bring about for Abraham what he has promised him." If we were to pick an admirable goal for ourselves, we might want to be righteous and just. There are also commands early on in the Bible for God’s people to do justice and seek justice in Exodus, but perhaps the strongest exhortation is found later in Deuteronomy 16: 20 Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, so that you may live and occupy the land that the LORD your God is giving you. This instruction clearly places a high priority on justice. Jesus condemns those who give the appearance of concern for justice, but neglect justice in interactions with people: Matthew 23: 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! The final bit of advice from God comes in Revelation 22: 11 Let the evildoer still do evil, and the filthy still be filthy, and the righteous still do right, and the holy still be holy." 12 "See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone's work. The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good (people) to do nothing. The kids learn many wonderful things about how God's love plays a role in everyone's life, every day. The teachers are so inspiring with the lessons they give each week; I can only encourage you as parents to reap the knowledge that each teacher presents to your child, you will be amazed! It would take more than a blurb to discuss any of those topics and so I am choosing to just share some short “pieces” to ponder . . . Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body but rather to slide in broadside thoroughly used up and totally worn out. If you think about that. . .it holds wisdom and truth! How about Courage is not the towering oak that sees storms come and go...it is the fragile blossom that opens in the storm. So…those of you who feel you have been dealt a ”tough deck of cards”. . . focus on the kernel of wisdom learned by the experience. Poor me never heals anything! Simple but true…practice the following— Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly and leave the rest to God! For those of you, who want some fun and some great coffee and conversation time, come to the Saturday morning exercise class. Just watching will get your giggles going!! Blood pressures will be taken between services on April 21. Happy Springtime to each of you!
