Broadway First School Newsletter – 9th September 2016
“Inspire – Challenge – Achieve”
www.broadway.worcs.sch.uk
*** The weekly newsletter is posted on our website and emailed to parents/carers ***
Dear Parents/Carers,
There is a lot of important information and news in this newsletter, so please take the time to read it through.
You might want to grab yourself a cup of tea!
First, may I formally welcome Mr Chapman to our school team. I have been in to class, and heard cheers
when he has told them about maths learning challenges! Sadly, we have said goodbye to Mr Jones, who has
worked hard on our governing body. We would like to thank him for all that he has done and wish him and
his family well for the future.
In addition to welcoming Mr Chapman to our school, we also welcomed some new parents to our first Friends‟
meeting of the year. The work that they do, and your support, means that we are able to offer trips at a
reduced cost to you and we are also able to have the little „extras‟ in school such as puppet shows, without
charging you. This year they have already allocated £1,500 for coaches (for Young Voices, class trips and the
residential visit). Last year they paid for Miss Boulton to be trained as a Forest School Leader. We are
delighted to inform you that Forest School lessons will start for Frog Class this term. Miss Boulton then has
to do a formal assessment, which will mean that we will be able to devise a timetable for all classes to
participate after Christmas.
Friends sent Smarties tubes home over the summer – please can you return them by Wednesday? The class
that raises the most (per head) will be given a choice of activity – last year the children that won had a water
fight with the children!
The next Friends‟ meeting is on Wednesday 2nd November (9.20am at school). If you are able to join us,
please do!
Of course, Friends is not the only way that you can support school. For example, Mrs Gibbs very kindly cut
the grass at the front of the school today and we already have some volunteers for reading. We also need
help for swimming and Forest Schools. If you would like to help in school, and are willing to have a DBS
check then please make an appointment to discuss how you may be able to help with Mrs Browning or Mr
Poultney.
On to other information now. You may be aware of the recent news articles about school uniform. Correct
school uniform is very important – it shows the children we are one team and that school rules are respected.
Whilst the standard of school uniform in the school is generally very high, this week some children have had
nail varnish on, braids in hair, etc. Although plain stud earrings are permitted, no other jewellery is allowed.
Please can you ensure that your child is in the correct uniform from Monday. The correct uniform is:
Boys
Girls
Grey trousers or grey shorts in summer
White polo shirt or shirt
Navy school sweatshirt or cardigan with logo
Black shoes (no canvas shoes or trainers)
Grey or white socks
Grey skirt/pinafore dress/trousers or a red
gingham dress in summer

Navy school sweatshirt or cardigan with logo
Grey or white socks or tights
Black shoes (no canvas shoes or trainers)
PE

General - All Pupils
Blue book bag
Navy PE bag for swimming and PE or a navy rucksack

You may buy uniform with the school badge sewn on to polo shirts and jumpers/cardigans/
coats from The School Shop in Evesham or Tesco (online). Mrs Gibbs also sells good quality second hand
uniform – please speak to her directly or let the office know if you would like to purchase anything from her.
If your child needs a new water bottle they may be purchased from the office for £1.
This week has been a busy week, and all of the children have completed a piece of art work for the
Horticultural and Craft Fair. You have may even have decided to create a recipe for the Food Festival. Most
children in Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 have also taken Accelerated Reading quizzes so that they can be given the
correct level of reading book to bring home. Parents of children in Reception are invited to a reading meeting
on Wednesday – we are running it at 9am and 6pm – and then your child will be given a book by the end of
next week. Homework also starts next week.
Mrs Bull also led an Eco Warrior assembly today to present our theme for this term which is recycling. Our
new Eco Warriors received their badges and will be monitoring each class to check on how well they are
recycling their rubbish.
In your child‟s book bag you will find their Home/School book today. It has an overview of learning in for the
half term and will also have weekly updates. If you have anything that you wish staff to know please write it
in your child‟s book. We check the books of children in Reception. For all other year groups your child will
need to hand it to the teacher for the note to be read – so please remind them to do this.
Next week the school gates will be open at 8:40am as usual and all children (including Reception) are to go on
to the playground and then the children will line up when the bell goes at 8.50am. When the bell goes, this is
time for parents to leave the playground as staff at the front of the school need to be able to lock up and get
in to the classrooms.
Just to recap, for next week:
- All children are to be in the correct school uniform
- Homework starts
- Clubs start (Football, French, Dance & Gardening); Year 3, 4 and 5 children can also register for
