Shirley Chisholm Honored With New Black History Postage Stamp A new US postage stamp honors pioneering New York congresswoman Shirley Chisholm just in time for Black History Month. The latest addition to the U.S. Postal Service’s Black Heritage series was introduced to several members of Congress at the First-Day-OfIssue Ceremony in Brooklyn on January 31, 2014. Chisholm is best known as the first African-American woman elected to Congress (representing a Brooklyn district from 1969 to 1983), and the first major-party black candidate and the second woman to seek the presidential nomination. She ran on the Democratic ticket in 1972. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, who currently holds Chisholm’s seat in New York’s Canada Issues two 12th Congressional District, described Chisholm as “one of my Black History Stamps biggest heroines.” Canada Post issued two Chisholm, a Bedford- stamps on January 20th honoring Stuyvesant resident, died in 2005. Black history month. The top stamp She was 80. recognizes Africville, one of Nova Scotia's oldest AfroCanadian communities. The bottom stamp recognizes Hogan's Alley in Vancouver, British Columbia. The woman pictured in the stamp is Nora Hendrix, Jimi Hendrix's grandmother. Both towns no longer exist.
