CHAPTER INVESTIGATION
Density
OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE In order for scientists around
o
the world to communicate with one another about calculations in
their research, they use a common system of measurement called
the metric system. Scientists use the same tools and methods for
the measurement of length, mass, and volume. In this investigation
you will
• use a ruler, a graduated cylinder, and a balance to measure
the mass, volume, and density of different objects
• determine which method is best for measuring the volume
of the objects
Procedure
MATERIALS
• small rock
• 5 pennies
• rectangular sponge
• tissue box
• beam balance
• large graduated cylinder
• water
• ruler
8.8.a, 8.8.b, 8.9.f
Make a data table like the one shown
on the sample notebook page.
step 2
Measure the mass of each object:
rock, pennies, sponge, and tissue
box. Record each mass.
For each object, conduct three trials
for mass. Average the trials to find a
final mass measurement.
Decide how you will find the volume of each object. For
rectangular objects, you will use the following formula:
Volume = length p width p height
For irregular objects, you will use the displacement method and
the following formula:
Volume of object = volume of water with object – volume of
water without object
