As President and CEO of Future 500, Shireman
helps the world’s largest companies and most
impassioned activists from Coca-Cola, General
Motors, Nike, Mitsubishi, to Greenpeace, Rainforest
Action Network, Oxfam, and the Sierra Club stop
battling each other, and find common ground. Called
a “master of environmental entrepreneurism,”
Shireman brings together forces that love to hate and
demonize each other: Republicans and Democrats,
giant global corporations and the activists. He united
Mitsubishi and Rainforest Action Network (RAN) to
work together to save rainforests from North America
to Malaysia. He brought together Coca-Cola and
Genocide Intervention Network to help promote
peace in the Sudan.
Bill Shireman has always lived two lives as an
entrepreneur and an activist. The best practice is
based on good theory, and the best theory is honed
by good practice. Shireman blends economic,
ecological, and systems theory to develop practical
solutions that meet multiple needs. He believes the
right and left need each other, that competition
leads to cooperation, that capitalism creates value if
external costs are owned, that consumers can also be
creators, and that nature is the best business model.
After finishing his military service, Cristóbal
Colón joined the staff of a mental hospital created.
He worked for 10 years in several institutions
initiating work therapy programmes. In 1981 he came
to the conclusion that real jobs for mental patients
can only be created in a real enterprise and decided
to put into practice. He created La Fageda to provide
dignity and meaning to individuals suffering from
mental illness or handicap, using an unconventional
mechanism given the target population group. He
created a social enterprise that is now known for its
excellent dairy products, particularly yoghurt and
flan. Its annual turnover was € 12 million in 2012,
competing for market share with Danone and Nestlé.
Each month La Fageda sells 4 million multi-flavoured
yoghurts, all made with natural ingredients. La
Fageda differs from its competitors because the
former wards of mental institutions run its dairy
production. La Fageda is a cooperative of 280 workers
with a support programme comprised of a group of
psychologists who follow each worker's personal and
professional rehabilitation.
