First aid measures In case of eye contact, immediately flush eyes with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. Assure adequate flushing of the eyes by separating the eyelids with fingers, and seek medical advice. In case of skin contact, immediately flush skin with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult give oxygen. If swallowed, wash out mouth with water provided person is conscious. Call a physician. Do not induce vomiting. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Section 5. Fire fighting measures Extinguishing media Non-combustible. Use extinguishing media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. Special fire fighting procedures Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Unusual fire and explosions hazards Emits toxic fumes under fire conditions. Section 6. Accidental release measures • Wear respirator, chemical safety goggles, rubber boots and heavy rubber gloves. • Sweep up, place in a bag and hold for waste disposal. • Avoid raising dust. • Ventilate area and wash spill site after material pickup is complete. Section 7. Handling and storage Store in GREY school chemical storage area. Refer to Section 8. Section 8. Exposure controls/personal protection • Wear approved respirator EN149 (in non ventilated areas), chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, other protective clothing. Prepared 06/12/01 By Dr. B. Chemical Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate CuSO4.5H2O Prepared 06/12/01 By Dr. B. Dunlevy Page 4 of 6 • Material is extremely destructive to tissue of the mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract, eyes and skin. • Absorption into the body leads to the formation of methemoglobin which in sufficient concentration causes cyanosis. Onset may be delayed 2 to 4 hours or longer. Inhalation may result: in spasm, inflammation and edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. Symptoms of exposure may include: burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. Exposure can cause: • Damage to the eyes • Gastrointestinal disturbances Chronic effects • Possible risk of congenital malformation in the fetus. • May cause reproductive disorders. Target organ(s): • Liver • Kidneys • Blood Additional information Chronic copper poisoning is typified by hepatic cirrhosis, brain damage and demyelination, kidney defects, and copper deposition in the cornea as exemplified by humans with Wilson’s disease. It has also been reported that copper poisoning has lead to haemolytic anaemia and accelerates arteriosclerosis. Toxicity data orl-man LDlo:857 mg/kg orl-hmn LDlo:50 mg/kg orl-rat LD50:300 mg/kg Target organ data • Behavioural (somnolence) (convulsions or effect on seizure threshold) (food intake) • Gastrointestinal (gastritis) (hypermotility, diarrhoea) (nausea or vomiting) • Kidney, ureter, bladder (changes in tubules) • Endocrine (tumours) Chemical Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate CuSO4.5H2O Prepared 06/12/01 By Dr. B.
